I've never owned an automatic, but I think you're correct. R for race and P for passing.

Okay I haven't not been able to read through all the replies here. I keep mine in "D", but what is best practice for transmission longevity? I am noticing alot of people that drive their autos in gears other than Drive.

I live in the hills above Reno, so I'm doing mountain/hill driving each time. I drive around town in 3rd and heading home. The road is a 50 mph, so it works great, pulling the hill. If I go on the highway/freeway, once I'm up to the 65 limit, I'll put it in overdrive. Works for me.

Keep mine in D most of the time, even at the drags.

I put it in "D" to go forward. "P" if I'm gonna get out, and sometimes "R" if I want to back up. Otherwise I put it in "1" for the money, "2" for the show, "3" to get ready, and "D" to go.

As I mentioned, in another thread. Some of those that leave it in overdrive, probably have lower rear gears or mods in hp or they might be in 3rd too.

Correct, but in this case, it's an overdrive gear ratio. Made/used for higher speed driving for better/cheaper highway driving and a higher top speed. But you probably already knew that.

ALWAYS in D. 50 miles every day in city traffic and at the dragstrip. The car knows what to do to give you max performance and protect itself. I intentionally try to keep the speed no lower than 36 mph if at all possible because that's where mine drops into overdrive. If you pay attention to the instantaneous fuel economy in the DIC, you'll be very surprised how much your mileage goes up at that point.

Around town, I use 3. It might be a placebo effect, but I swear the throttle and brakes are more responsive when this gear is selected. Maybe it's my imagination or the computer's tuning... dunno.

When I get on the highway/freeway for than a couple miles it goes into (D).

I like the growl in 3rd around town, but definitely -D-on the highway.
