Okay I haven't not been able to read through all the replies here. I keep mine in "D", but what is best practice for transmission longevity? I am noticing alot of people that drive their autos in gears other than Drive.

Safety Car
I live in the hills above Reno, so I'm doing mountain/hill driving each time. I drive around town in 3rd and heading home. The road is a 50 mph, so it works great, pulling the hill. If I go on the highway/freeway, once I'm up to the 65 limit, I'll put it in overdrive. Works for me.

Melting Slicks
I put it in "D" to go forward. "P" if I'm gonna get out, and sometimes "R" if I want to back up. Otherwise I put it in "1" for the money, "2" for the show, "3" to get ready, and "D" to go.

In the mid 90's we use to go thru a lot of transmissions in our squad cars ........... I talked to a GM transmission trouble shooter and he told me if we were in areas where the trans was to shift alot going thru different speeds .......... leave it in 3rd until oh highway maintaining higher speeds .......... haven't rebuild a tranny since.
In town driving .......... I'm in 3rd.

ALWAYS in D. 50 miles every day in city traffic and at the dragstrip. The car knows what to do to give you max performance and protect itself. I intentionally try to keep the speed no lower than 36 mph if at all possible because that's where mine drops into overdrive. If you pay attention to the instantaneous fuel economy in the DIC, you'll be very surprised how much your mileage goes up at that point.

Around town, I use 3. It might be a placebo effect, but I swear the throttle and brakes are more responsive when this gear is selected. Maybe it's my imagination or the computer's tuning... dunno.
When I get on the highway/freeway for than a couple miles it goes into (D).
