Drove the C5 to work and look what happened
Last night I decided to drive my 2000 Coupe to work. She sat in the parking lot from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM. At about 6:40 AM, I decided to warm it up before my 26 mile drive home. I turned on the rear defroster and the back window immediately EXPLODED! Scared the hell out of me. I thought somebody was shooting at me. I guess I'll find out Monday what this is going to cost.

Wowsers!!! In over 11 years owning my C5 and 8 years here on the forum, I've never heard or seen anything like that.
I thought for sure you car was vandalized. I guess it was...'Old Man Winter'. Also...what was the temp...?
Keep us posted on the fix/insurance process.

Wow, that's wierd.
My DD sits out in sub zero temperatures all winter and seems to take it in its stride
Hope you get it fixed up OK.

That same phenomenon happened to my '86 Trans Am (with an even bigger back window) back around '89, but the opposite in temperatures. I was living in Ft. Lauderdale and it was July. Temps were above 100 deg. F. I got in my car, turned on the A/C on high and drove a couple of minutes to the supermarket.
Right after I entered the market, a voice called out my license plate over the PA system. I ran out to find people standing around my car and the rear window totally blown out or in. One of the witnesses said he heard my window explode from across the parking lot.
The force was so large it blew the entire hatch off of both rear latches and left the hatch sticking a couple of inches behind it's usual position. I think the temp difference in air inside and outside of the car due to the cold A/C and heat caused the window to contract on the inside and expand on the outside simultaneously, causing the glass to literally contort and pull itself apart.
I still have pictures of the hatch afterwards. Insurance paid for it minus my deductible.
