Sounds like a loose connection. Trace the wires and you'll prob find it.

The RPM gage is called a tachometer.

^ LOL

Anyway, +1 on the loose connection in the wiring. Follow the yellow brick road and your problem, you will find. --Yota

I'll hook it up to some kinda datalogger to see if the pcm is loosing a rpm signal also. I find it weird that just the tach will cut out and nothing else on the cluster. just making me believe its not the cluster connection.

Again, there is a ground on the side of the engine block just below the #6/8 cylinders that may be loose. This usually affects more than just the tachometer though so maybe the cluster is going bad????? Any codes related to the IPC?
