Default Selling my 85 for a c5 a little help needed please

Looking at a 2000 with 18000 miles for $23,000.00 or an 04 with 9000mi for $31,000. Of course i'd like to spend the least but i know nothing of c5's and was wondering if the 04 is much improved over the 00. maybe someone could help me make a choice or help educate this poor clueless c4 vet owner.

Conventional wisdom is to buy the newest and lowest mileage C5 you can afford...set a budget. There are PLENTY for sale. All C5's are great...just look, look, look, and keep looking, until you find the perfect one that meets all your criterior. Don't settle for something less, wait for the right C5!

1. Three models to choose: vert, coupe (targa top), and Z06 (fixed roof). Vert and targa same equipment, Z06 has more HP, etc.
2. Two trans: 6-speed manual or 4-speed auto.
3. Many are modded, that may be good or bad.

Look around there have been a lot of 04 in the 25,000 range. There was a 04 artic white coupe listed here with 13,000 miles for 25,500. Slow Corvette market right now.

Try to get an 02 on up. They had some major improvements over the 2k.

Bill - GM did make some upgrades over the course of the C5 run and the '04 would have all of them. I think the '04 is a bit high on price though. I've got a few Word files that may help you out. PM me your e-mail address and I'll share them with you.

Thanks for the info. The 04 is at a dealership. Got a better price of $29,000 with a small warranty. I am going to still look. Took me a while to get my 85 in good order and a lot of it was fixed in the later c4 years. Some was not possible to get. As c5's matured it must be same . 00 was one sweet drive though. It sure is hard to decide. The ride and handleing sure has come a long way. I resisted but till you drive them you better not thumb your nose at any of our corvettes!!!!

Just a note to let you know I love my '00 Coupe. I had an '81 coupe prior to the '00. Like you said, a huge step up. I'm pretty sure you'll be happy with any C5, as long as it's not abused. Personally, I'd look for an '03, the one before GM put the fuel filter in the fuel tank, as is the case on the '04. '03 probably has nearly all the same improvements that the '04 has. '01s and later have improved active handling, less expensive tire pressure sensors among other things, the larger volume LS6 intake manifold (plus 10hp), cast iron exhaust manifolds, and horsepower robbing (5hp) pup cats. The '00 C5 had largest camshaft (lift and duration) of any C5 LSI engine.

If that 04 is a coupe, it's way high.
I'd say look for an 02 newer.
Spend some time and you can find some nice examples, and should be able to find what you are looking for.
Good luck.

Just to make it harder for me. the 2000 turns out to be a trade in and they droped $1,000 and threw in a 1 year bumper to bumper warranty. I drove and looked the car over again. i wish i could find a reason not to buy. I have a hold for 2 days to think about it. Help. There is no curb rash. Rims are not blemished. interior looks new. Engine compartment looks new but not just cleaned new. BTW did i mention its a vert?? If that changes anything. Looks like orig battery. Hud, air etc all work fine.
The warrany is throwing me. Would it make a difference to any of you??

Convertible makes it worth a bit more . Like evrybody says try to be patient. i know it's very hard. IMHO 22k is'nt outrages for a 2000 vert. You can probably find another one cheaper but it may take awhile.
If this 2000 has everything that you want........I'd say go for it
If that is a bumper to bumper warranty that is something you can't get from a private owner who maybe selling a like car a bit cheaper. Peace of mind has a price. Corvette parts can carry a larger price
BTW what ever you do.......we are going to insist on pictures. Good Luck

Kind of......
It's a buyers market but an '04 with that few miles is worth the extra $$$. If the '04 has the features you want, you can always work on the price. GOOD LUCK and enjoy the C5!!!!

Yes, the vert and the warranty make a big difference!
20K with warranty and a battery?
How are the tires?
Good luck to you.

The warranty is a BIG Plus. My 04 puked its motor at 27k mies and I had a 0 deduct warranty.

Good Luck

Tires are excellent. 00 has hud, full memory ,vert, climate ,ride select 12 cd on and on it seems loaded. power everything. passive etc. The 1 year warr sure makes me look three four times. the best part if i decide is no car payment. If i go the 04 or newer i can't quite pick all the cash i need off the tree. Know what i mean. Sorry post took so long, getting the 85 ready for Carlisle.

All I can tell you is may of 07 I wanted a C5, I looked and found one locally. A 02 Vert with 15.5K on the clock for 27,500 with my trade of a great looking 84. I tried to sell the 84 for 2-3 months and no takers so I ended up trading it at a price, lower that I wanted. But How happy I am with my 02.... Just get what you can afford and enjoy....

What great support and help you find on the Forum.
Sue has decided she likes the 85 so it will move to the left side of the garage and stay there to see what the future brings. that said I guess you are correct it comes down to what you can afford apposed to what you want and need. I've looked at a lot of c5's in last few weeks but it seems the the 00 fits my budget. I did toss and turn on an 04 auto but decided a stick is what i want. Even looked at some c6's but any in lower price ranges were lacking in features. I looked at an 07 for $37000 and when your looking at an 00 for 23000 it sounds good. Except, sudtract hud, cd changer, memory , climate control, ride control etc its a very spartan ride. Its also a targa. It was an ls1 6 speed. I guess i'm selling myself.

Good point. My 04 has 28k on it with an extended warranty. Showroom condition.

Still, $29K seems like a bit too much in this market for a car like mine.
