Chicago downtown in a C5. Good idea? Bad idea?
We are going to Chicago in September. What is the driving like downtown? Lots of ONE WAY streets? Bumper to bumper? Parking? Parking garages with steep driveways?

I'm very **** about my car as well and wouldn't drive it to Chicago. It's not so much the roads (which are pretty bad), but I wouldn't dream of parking it somewhere for any length of time.

The wife and I were there a few months ago for a long weekend. I drove the Vert up but parked it at the Swiss Hotel and left it in their covered parking/secure area and walked or took buss around. The parking fees in the underground areas are hi and I wouldn,t leave it there.
We did cruse around downtown when we were leaving. Mark

I would go ahead and drive the C-5. There is a great self park at the corner of Deleware and Rush St that is not too $. Just use the regular caution on the ramps and there are usually open areas at the upper floors. I drove an AudiTT for 5 years when I lived downtown and never had a problem. Enjoy.

I used to live in Chicago some years back. Been back a few times since.
The roads suck! It is very crowded and parking is at a premium in the downtown area. Public transit is the best way around.
There always seems to be a lot of road construction going on at this time of the year.

Don't do it!!!!!! The roads in Chicago are absolutely terrible. Downtown is very congested and the probabiltiy of getting nailed by a Taxi or Bus is pretty high. Keep that puppy home and safe.

Been there done that with no problems.
Don't drive in Memphis though. It's like bumper cars every day and they just hit you and drive off.
Roads are great. Drivers suk.

I live about 45 miles outside of Chicago ( South ). Just been there a few weeks ago to see a show.
1. Park in a self park garage that's covered. That way you can ensure that the attentdants won't be playing with your car. And don't park on those open type parking lots -yes they are about $5 cheaper but they park your car literally about 6 inches away from the next car ( ON ALL SIDES )
2. There are many potholes and a##hole drivers so be careful -but then again -what major city doesn't. ( went to see a show -we "ALMOST" got hit twice -they told you about defensive driving -USE IT WELL.
3. Congestion is not that bad in downtown itself, it's the expressways/highways that people use to get to Chicago are the ones that're always congested - like many others have said, a lot of one way streets. Don't forget to visit the Lincoln Park Zoo and the Magnificent Mile
Otherwise it is one of the most lovely cities I've been too. But then again -I'm a little biased.
