Has anyone else encountered this problem on theier C5.
I have heard it was pretty common.
And does anyone know if this was a Dealer Recall ??

I hope the $300 - $400 price is accurate, mine just developed the problem this weekend. Having read enough posts about it I'm in the habit of always checking, and sure enough a small spot has appeared on my garage floor.

Yeah, Butt Leak Mines got one too. Looking at the fix article a guy could probably do it himself but I'm gonna try to find a reputable shop in Reno, NV. Anybody got any ideas?

Is it always on the driver's side? Or does it happen on either side and should you look to replace them both as long as you're doing one side?
Guess I'm also on this list...

I just had mine replaced a couple of months ago. The dealer charged me around $400 and it only took a few hours. 400 miles later and no leak yet. Don't forget to baby (no WOT) it for he first 300 miles. If not, you might just rip the new seal up and then have to do it all over again.

It's almost always on the left side. Late last year both of my C5's had a leaking rear at the same time and were covered by extended warranties. Just today, my '02 was at the dealership getting the right side repaired, under warranty. The corvette mechanic said that it is very rare for the right side to leak. So hopefully my '04 right side won't leak.

I had a rear seal leak three times on my previous C5. Dealer fixed each of them under warranty, and the third time was the charm for me in that it didn't leak again. As far as I know, there was no recall for this problem.

You know, I just remembered... he did some gear work in the diff as well, there was a bulletin for my VIN
It was only a few Vettes on the day of my build...
Sorry to scare you if I did...

Do it yourself if you ever replaced the cv joints on any fwd car before. It was no harder than my old Honda Civic. I replaced mine 3 years ago and it went fine. cost me around 50 bucks and it took me 4 hours or so but I took my time to clean up all of the grease that was slung around the rear axle. Make sure you get the GM positrac additive for the rear end when you refill the gear lube.
The new seal from GM is an improved design (I could see the difference). They also suggest replacing the o-ring that seals the cover. I was able to do it with common hand tools and the excellent writeup that I found on this site.
The drivers side seal seem to be the most common side to leak. Just replace the side that is leaking - I would not worry about the other side if its not leaking at all.
Make sure you use wheel bearing grease to lube the new seal were it meets the axle and you will not have any seal "break-in" issues at all.
Good luck.
