171 mph...Try doing a general google search on GM site. That may help. Also try searching the forum.

That is it! I figured they would go past the 200mph mark .

The Z06 is gear limited in 5th, since it has aggressive gearing. One way to get a higher top speed without changing horsepower is to swap for less aggressive gearing like womanly 2.73 rear gear from an old automatic C5. You will have a higher top speed but it will take you alot longer to get there so that's no fun.

For ~200 mph, you'll need nearly 500 rwhp and something like a C6 Z06 trans since its geared less aggressively.

So, are we pretty sure that the factory advertised top speed was 171 mph. I did a search on the forum with no sucess.

Ironically, because of the transmission gearing, the same year model coupe with the LS1 was rated at 175.

It isn't because of the transmission. It is because the coupe takes less horsepower to drive through the air. The FRC body style is not as aerodynamic and thus slower. In 99 and 00 when the FRC had the same engine and tranny as the coupe they were also slower.

Doesn't the Z06 provide more down force?

It is due to the wind resistance of the Z06. It is more than the Coupe, so even with more HP, the top speed is less. Coupe's top speed is 176 mph.

The rear glass section of the LS1 coupe being more aerodynamic was also a big factor.

The coupe has less drag because of the top configuration. In this case less HP, better aerodynamics= higher speed.

The coupe is faster while the Z06 is quicker. I was being sarcastic as to the "200mph" mark jiji.

Actually, it is kind of both. The tranny is closer ratio and it has 3.42s out back. The stock Z06 can redline 5th gear even though it makes peak power at 6000. So if it had slightly taller gears either in 5th or in the rear it would be able to go faster in 5th. You also have to remember that even though they're rated at 405 dynos have shown that they make more like 425 at the crank so the hp difference is a little more than people might think.
I do agree though that the coupe has a slightly better coefficient of drag so all things being equal except body style the coupe has a higher top speed.

Are we Sure on the Top Speed. I know I've been 159 MPH in my Z06 and I thought there was at least another 20 - 25 mph left in her!
