The latest feedback is that a hub can be made, but at the cost of about 300-400 Euros.

Yes.

Because eventually, the membrane that controls the horn in the factory wheel will fail from heat and age, whereas this one won't.

$400 Euros = $627 US dollars currently. That plus the price of the wheel itself will push this past a $1k endeavor. I'll probably still do it, but I bet the pool of candidates is dwindling rapidly.

Cost recovery from the sale of old wheel and airbag shoukld net you the cost of hub, so all you will be paying for is the steering wheel.
