Shock Change Interval
Any guidance on how frequently shocks need to be changed?
My '00 FE1 coupe has 57k miles on it and I'm thinking about upgrading to the C6Z shocks. I put C5Z bars on it last winter and really like the new ride.
I know the old bounce test, but this seems very subjective. Any ideas on rate of degredation of seals and fluid within the shocks themselves?
Thanks,
Jay

Drifting
I did a search on my service manual cd. Didn't see anything on a specified frequency for changing shocks.
I did find a service bulletin on warranty replacement of shocks and struts.
It says "defective shock absorbers will have a visible oil path or drip coming from the component..." Not to be confused with "seepage" which is an "oil film or dust accumulation" and is considered normal.
I guess, unless they're dripping oil, you don't need to change them, unless you're dissatisfied with the ride.
Anybody else?

Shock IMO have a shorter life cycle than most people think. They are constantly working and considering that most automobile parts are made by the lowest bidder then I would say 40 to 50K is more than long enough lifespan on any factory shock. Now if you have an expensive aftermarket shock than I would say 75K would not be out of the realm.
I replaced my 01 z51 shocks with only 30K miles on them with Bilstein HD shocks and I noticed a great improvement on ALL road surfaces at ALL speeds. One thing that really impressed me was on the interstate overpasses and bridges the old shock would bounce twice and settle down. It was still smooth but it was a little floaty. Now with the new Bilstein its once and then settles down. Much better control and handling at high speeds and curves. Plus much less (or no) wheel hop from a hard takeoffs or on a rough road when accelerating (esp. onramps). My old shocks were not leaking either.
I would not hesitate to replace the shocks with a quality aftermarket or one of the z shocks of your choice.
Good luck.
