I'm currently going through the initial sign up stage. I can tell ya - if you have drivers listed that are under age 25 - might as well save your time.

AARP is owned by United Health Care. My company switched from Blue Cross Blue Shield health Ins. because it was cheaper ,to UNHC.Many of the Drs. in this area will not except UNHC. I would be carefull dealing with AARP. I was a member of AARP, but cancelled my membership. I would be real carefull, I think you would have a problem.

FWIW, I was somewhat dissapointed with the AARP auto ins. quote on my '03 Z06. For the same coverage I'm getting with State Farm, and the fact that I've been using the same agent for about ten years and her office is five min. from my house...I was only going to save about $10.00-$12.00 a month with AARP. (I'm 55 and NO tickets)

I stayed with my agent at State Farm...

this is EXACTLY where I thought this would lead me. I wasn't willing to switch ins. companies for just a hundred dollosr or two. But to my surprise - with an absolutely clean driving record and no claims - I'll be saving $930 on car insurance through them (all four vehicles).

I wonder if the savings amount varies ... based on geographical location?

I'm guessing it varies by location. My wife was a Farmers agent, and in our location, ages, cars, etc., they were unbeatable. I'm at about $240 per six months on my vert. My son's 1995 Buick Century costs me rather more than that. Of course, I still have the company car, so the Vette is purely pleasure use.

AARP didn't appeal to me, but I joined anyway. We go to Fort Bragg, on the California north coast, a couple of times a year, and each trip saves me about four times the membership cost, since the hotel we like offers a good AARP discount. Other than that, most of the stuff we receive in the mail gets s**tcanned right away. And with teenagers, sounds like the insurance is out.

Back to geography. I could move 25 miles, to a smaller town, and double my insurance because they have a higher instance of uninsured drivers, worse claims history, etc. We stay with Farmers/Midcentury because they are the best value right now, and the agent who took over my wife's book of business provides excellent service. But it's worth shopping.

Mike, congrats on scoring a terrific deal! I'll have to look at it when the last teenager leaves or turns 25 - and I'm pushing 70

Mike, I agree you got a great deal and alot of $$$ saved. Congrats...

My quote was for my Vette and my Silverado PU (daily driver) and just wasn't worth switching for about $150.00 per year. I like having an ins agent close by (one mile from my house) and if I need help, she's just a local phone call away.

Congrats again.

That's what I found too. Of course State Farm has all four of my vehicles and the house so there is a discount for that.

I talked to a friend who runs a body shop specializing in insurance work & he said that AARP insurance will not pay for NIB replacement parts. They will pay for used or aftermarket (Chinese) replacement body parts. That is why they are cheaper than other companies.

BTW, I did check & AARP can save me $250+ a year but if the customer service is awful, I would rather pay more.

I just tried to get a quote on line for my DD truck, my wife's Honda Accord and the Vette and got the messaage below.

We apologize for any inconvenience, but we are unable to provide you with an immediate quotation at this time. Please be assured that your request has been received.

In order to provide you with the superior service that you deserve, there are certain circumstances in which we are unable to provide a premium quotation on-line without the assistance of a trained insurance representative.

We will review the information that you provided and contact you within two business days. Again, we apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for requesting an automobile insurance quote from The Hartford.

.
interesting; how can the Hartford be cheaper than the others... when the others also use aftermarket parts ??? I thought that was a given with all - but one or two holdouts (and they're changing over to aftermarket parts as well within the near future - or so I've heard).

Which ins company are you with ? I'll research it, and let you know if they authorize aftermarket part useage.

I am with Cincinnati & have been for years. I thought (from my friend) that most insurances used original replacement parts except Alstate AARP & State Farm which all are very hard to even get paid. Again this is what I have been told. I have NO first hand knowlege.

I've had my home and vehicles insured with AARP (The Hartford) for several years now. Had a claim last year on the vette...some a-hole slashed our vert top. Great service on a total replacement of the top from The Hartford! No increase in premiums, unlike other insurance carriers I've had in the past.
I also had a ticket last year (I need a V-1, but that's another story).
I expected a huge jump in premiums, but only went up $3.00/mo as a result!!
I'm very pleased with their coverages and service!

Tim, thank you for starting this thread. I'll be 50 next month, so a few months ago I started getting info from AARP.

I currently insure two C5's, and two other cars with Geiko. The all of the cars have clear bra's and I have put extra insurance on both Vettes to cover mods.

Both myself and the wife have clean driving records. Knock on wood no accidents since I can remember, and no tickets for many many years.

I compared the same coverages, deductibles, etc. everything except the mods added to the cars. I will have to call them to see what the extra cost is. It's normally less than a hundred dollars a year for both.

Are you sitting down for this? Geiko 3492.00 per year AARP without the add on mods.............1471.00 per year!!!

I've been very lucky, haven't made any claims for anything in years. So I think even if they might be hard to deal with, for the savings I think I'll take the gamble. Thanks again. David

I checked with AARP (Hartford) and they couldn't touch my existing policy premium claiming the "loyalty discount" afforded us will never let a new to us competitor under cut our policies. But on a different note I can tell you folks that the AARP discount given for hotel/motel accomodations is without a doubt the very best discount you can get when looking for lodging, beating out AAA and my Government discounts every time there is a difference. Sometimes the discounts are all the same, but on more occasions than not the AARP wins hands down by a few bucks. It pays to belong.

No, you don't need it. With the Viagra Mod, you can tilt the steering with both hands still on the wheel.

One thing to remember, just because your rate is lower this year, doesn't mean it will be next renewal time. Many of the "cheaper" companies today will have a lower teaser rate for a year or so, then jack it up, and you've already given up your long term customer rate at the other company. Kinda like the cable companies, the lower than the other guys rate doesn't stay that way forever. Doesn't mean everybody is that way, but beware before giving up a company thats been good. My company didn't raise my rates(good thing with 2 vettes and a TBSS) when I had an accident that was my fault(did I say that?), and let me fix the car myself even.

Hartford insurance (according to their website) identical to my GEICO policy is $642 MORE! That's a lot of gas!

Me thinks some of you might want to look into GEICO.
