Painting calipers? Goodor bad idea
Being a new vette ower I was curious if anyone has had success painting the calipers red to mimic the z06 calipers. Do you think a few coats of Krylon would do the trick. I don't plan on showing the car..just adding a little bling. Any thoughts?

I painted mine on the car in lieu of taking them completely off which takes a bit of patience but no big deal. I'd recommend you pick up a red
caliper paint kit from your local auto store. The kit will have everything you need to clean and paint the calipers with high temp paint. You'll like the results! Good luck, Ron

It's a good thing. I used Rustolem Sunrise Red Gloss. Cost $3.49. Enough paint to probably paint 100 calipers. Looks great, lasts a long time if done properly.

I used red caliper paint, and they came out quite good; I think it took from three to four coats to get them to be red. The first one is like what did I do; the second one is ; the third one starts to look quite better the third or fourth coat depending on the thickness of the paint is like

Those look good: I need to paint my brackets too, but it will be some months ahead . Also, I used an angle grinder to rub the paint of the raised CORVETTE letters. I tryed using a sanding block, but I ended up scraping and repainting the caliper in the process.

Painting using brushes is one option. Another option is removing the calipers and spraying them is another. Still another option is having the calipers powdercoated. There have been ton's of thread on the subject, and there are a number of forum supporting vendors that will powdercoat them for you and return them assembled.
Personally - I can't think of any "cons" to doing it.

Painting them is the easiest mod you can do and it can have a large impact on how your car's side profile looks I used the Duplicolor caliper kit. Some advice would be to;
1) CLEAN the calipers throughly with the supplied caliper cleaner and a scrub with a toothbrush. This is critical for a good finished product!
2.) allow each coat to dry for about 15-20mins before applying the next coat or it will streak the first coat. This is important or you will end up putting 10 coats of paint on your calipers when they don't need it.
3.) apply about 4-5 coats or until you cant see any gray.
4.) Avoid using the supplied crappy brush as it streaks the paint. Use a 1" foam brush as they streak much less and the paint goes on better.
5.) Once finished, allow it to the paint to cure foe at least 24hrs. It will look much better after it cures.
6.) Sit back and drink your favorite frosty drink while admiring your work.
7.) Don't go to the automatic car washers that force water jets on your wheels to clean them. It will blow the paint off your calipers. Ask me how I know .
Good luck on your caliper mod.

I've painted the calipers on both the C5's that I've owned and they came out looking great. I paint them on the car with high temp paint.

Junkman2008 did a super job of explaining the whole job. He also added a little humor to show what not to do.

Thanks to Junkman2008 for such a great write up.
Question for the folks that have completed this project. Can this be done in a day? thanks, Rob

I painted mine using 2 cans of the GM paint from the dealer to match the car. I used 2 coats of high-temp black as a base. Then three coats of the body color. I sprayed the calipers on the car. Just masked everything off. I used a q-tip with a very little amount of grease on it and coated the "CORVETTE". When the paint dried I just wiped off the "Corvette". Sorry for the partial picture. It's pouring down here an I didn't have room to move the car for a better picture.

The brush that comes in the DUPLICOLOR caliper kits is terrible. Buy a small package of better quality art brushes. The DUPLICOLOR kits use a silica based paint which is pretty glossy and durable. You don't even have to completely remove the calipers to do a good job.
I recently did the calipers on my new Silverado because it came from GM with black calipers and silver calipers. The variety of brushes allowed me to paint into the nooks/crannies so it's completely covered on both sides.
