i was thinking the same thing, maybe paint on forged looks different, i will get a sample made up of wapb-9789 and look at it, but if anyone knows why the 01 wheels are darker let us in on the secret paint code..

I have both 01' Alcoas and 03' Speedlines with factory paint. The paint code WA 9789 only matches the finish on the Alcoas. It does not match 02' to 04' Speedlines. The Alcoas are not only slightly darker but also have a little more metalflake than the Speedlines. In a pinch you could use it as touch up, but it will not be a very good match. I've searched for quite a while for the correct code to match the Speedline finish but like others have only been able come up with the incorrect WA 9789.

Good to know i asked this question few months back and never got an answer.
Why they changed the color on the 02-04 speedlines i will never know. I love the 01 alcoa color.

The paint codes are the same. The finish difference is because of the way the wheels are made.

The 2001 look darker because they were manufactured by a different process and company, so the base metal is darker. GM insisted on the same paint code as they were looking at switching to the new manufacturer before the end of the 2001 model year because of shortages in wheel production. Only after they received some samples from Speedline did they realize the color looks slightly lighter on the cast/spun wheeels than on the forged wheels.

For what it's worth.... I've now painted a Speedline wheel in WA9789 and I can confirm it only matches the OEM finish (colour) on the Alcoas. I.e Speedline wheel painted in WA9789 has the same finish as an OEM Alcoa wheel. So the therory that the different colours of the Alocoa and the Speeline is due to the different wheel design is NOT true. I hope this is useful information that could put an end to the previously misleading info presented here.
