Just to answer that insurance question, while leaving your keys in the ignition does seem like it would be negligence, it is not enough to deny the claim. They would pay for the car, they could drop you for it afterwards, but thats about it.
As for me right now my car is locked, battery removed covered in a unlocked garage which is about 200 feet from my apartment, but on the opposite side of the building ( I cant see it from my windows). Normally it is locked and alarmed in the garage. I would lock the garage but the one next to mine the lock is broke so someone could just as easy walk in there and open mine (common garage) so why bother.

Unlocked in attached garage and I leave the keys in the console.
Come on.....who would look there !
House and garage is alarmed and maybe there are a few other things that a thief would not like Plus...
We care for my wifes sick mother and have a live in aid so between all of us there is someone there 24x7.

Interesting thread. I never even considered locking mine when in the garage... don't think I ever will either. If an intruder got into my garage, he/she would then have access to all my tools, which means, entering my home would be a piece of cake. I love my Vette, but all in all, I would far rather have a miscreant take off with my Vette than come in and bother me or my family. Plus, it would save him/her from the possibly fatal experience of meeting my dog and my two friends... Smith & Wesson.

I keep our vehicles all locked with the security system activated. The garage/shop is also zoned into the house security system. Three vehicles are driven regularly so battery charge isn't an issue. My Z16 is on a BATTERY TENDER PLUS.
If you think about it, your bifold metal garage bay doors are actually very easy for a determined thief to get into. Yeah, it'll make a lot of noise, but put a bumper (or determined pressure) against the thin gauge metal and they'll fold like an accordion. The side rails are secured with usually nothing more than lag bolts into a 2x4".
If you assume that insurance companies won't look for any excuse to deny or delay a claim, you're very trusting (or naive).
It's your car to do with as you please...

While it's parked in my garage, it is left unlocked. Don't see any need to lock it unless it is outside.

An at fault accident can be denied as well if they find out you did it ON PURPOSE. And negligence with theft is MUCH different than an at-fault accident. Without digging through pages of coverage information I couldn't tell you whether I have a negligence clause, but I've heard of many that have it.

In your example, if its on purpose then it obvioulsy isn't an accident (meaning no intent).
Have a good holiday.
