Thats correct! There is absolutly no direct correlation between speeding and accidents. There is always a second factor involved such as drinking, reckless driving, drugs, or just pure stupidity.

Montana had no speed limit for a while, but I heard recently that they imposed a new 75 mph limit.

I was stationed in Germany during my Army service, and remember some driving on the autobahn , all you would see was a quick flash scream around you..

Correct.
Growing up in rural Florida during the 1950s was fun, not many people and good roads plus learners permit at age 14. Speed limits were determined by how fast your car would go.
Oh how things change, just drive through Orlando to see what I mean and don't even go 1 mph over the limit in Waldo,Fl. the number #1 speed trap in America according to AAA. Oh well Desoto Drag strip is just down the road.

I remember the article, and it was about Wyoming. I can't find the article but will continue to look.

So since some of these roads don't have speed limits, it would seem that talking about how fast someone went on one of these roads would be no different from talking about driving at the posted limit in Virginia or somewhere. Anybody want to jump in here and recount there experiences here?

I may be wrong, but I believe that every state now has posted speed limits, Montana did have an open limit on their highway about ten years ago, but they changed that, and as was said earlier that it was up to the LEO's discrecsion(sp?), and that most out of staters got tickets

I can think of three events where they shut down hwys and hold events, the Silverstate in NV., the one in TX, and the Sandhill Classic in NE

Not that I have been to any, but it is on my list of things to do

Same here in S. Calif. everyday! I was driving home last night in the rain doing about 70 or so. Getting passed by people doing 80 and above. When its usually not raining, people passing me doing 90+ is common place and lots of ricers racing each other going well above 90.

Montana imposed a 75MPH speed limit on their highways a few years ago. The big reason was that the Federal Department of Transportation threated to cut off federal highway funds if they did not set daytime speed limits (Montana has had night speed limits for a long time and IIRC, they are around 60 to 65).

States rely on federal funding for road repair, improvement and new roads. There would be no way that a state could keep roads in any sort of decent condition without federal funds.

That would be fun but once you read up on the Autobahn in Germany, you would find that it costs a ton of money to drive at "Frei Fahrt" over there. There are extremely strict rules for high speed driving, a driver's license can run into 4 figures, you need to go to driver's school that lasts for months even to get a driver's license and most parts of the Autobahn in Germany use electronic surveillance to grab offending driver's.

Just driving slow in the left lane on the Autobahn is a violation that can run in the hundred's of dollars. You don't always get stopped; you get a ticket in the mail with a pic of you, your car, and the speed you were driving.

I would hate to even think of the number of rice rockets and kids with zero common sense (an the potential for carnage) being out on an American Autobahn with no other traffic laws than we have today
