Three years ago I purchased a Red Topp battery...I was impressed with the warranty. Come to find out, be careful where you buy your Optima battery---you don't get a nationwide warranty. I asked Optima to confirm that they do not have a nationwide warranty when I found out that a particular parts store would not honor the Optima warranty:

"Unfortunately if you did not purchase the battery from a particular store,
the do not have to warranty the battery. It is up to the stores
discreation of whether or not they will warranty the battery and we cannot
force them to honor the warranty. I am sorry to inform you of this.


Please feel free to contact customer service at the number below if you
have any other questions. Thank you for your interest and support of Optima Batteries."

To me, this pretty much sucks not to have a nationwide warranty, especially if you take a trip and get a dead/nonrechargeable battery away from your home state and Goober's filling station is only where you live.

What's this got to do with the battery itself?

A warranty is a warranty. its not optional. One hint of a small claim and they'd fold.

Is the place where you bought the battery an authorized dealer? If so....they need to cover the warranty. I would call the dealer you bought it from & ask about the warranty. If they say it is warranted by optima, GET THE NAME of the person you talked too, go there & demand an exchange for your bad battery.

Yeh ? I didnt realize it should work like that. I did have my Optima replaced while I was on vacation, but I did it at the same autoparts chain that I bought it from (just a different store in a different state).
I wouldnt expect to be able to take it to anyone who sold the same item.
Although I would expect that kind of treatment for a car, or a TV.

SO if I have a problem with my tires that is due to a defect while on the road, you think I can go to any tire shop that carries Michelins ?

I'm fairly certain that if you buy an AC Delco battery and it fails, you should be able to take it to any dealer or authorized parts store that sells them, for replacement (in the US and Canada). See:

Don't ya just love that, buy a 6 year battery but your good for only 30 months for a no charge period, after that its pro rated.

One might take a guess that after 30 months you best be keeping an eye on it as a bookie in Las Vegas has odds that at 32 months you'll be buying a new battery.

Oh well such is life.

My first battery was one of those that the terminal broke off then started dumping acid. I replaced it with a Costco battery since that was the only place open at that instant and it lasted for years. I noticed it was starting to get a hair weak, so I replaced it with a Sam's Club battery which is working just fine. The Costco battery cost me like $35 and more recently the Sam's battery cost me like $42. I've heard too many stories in this forum regarding these supposedly great Optima batteries failing....not just a few of them either.

For me I borrowed a little charger from a friend across the street to get the thing charged up enough to go fetch a new battery.

I have also heard the same horror stories, I think they are way overrated, I just keep smiling that my Wal Mart Everstart is still going after eight years for $40. I would never pay that kind of dough for a battery, my opinion.

For what it is worth I was at Advance and the salesman told a buyer of a red top to not charge it with more than two amps, now tell me that the alternator on a car does not put more than two amps into the battery while running, very weird.

Say what you want about Optimas, but at least they won't leak acid all over your car's wiring and electronics, which is more than I can say for the original AC/Delco battery in my car.

Exide Orbital AGM Battery, I believe NAPA sells them. I got mine from SAMS CLUB, but they switched to Energizer and no longer carry them.

My Red Top went bad, actually was in decline for sometime, just short of three years and I took it back to Sears where I originally got it. Since, they don't handle Optima anymore. I got a new Diehard Platinum for $11.83 additional, the list price difference.

I would expect with a national brand that the warranty would be honored by anyone who carried them! You learn something new everyday!

Never heard of them, is that an AC-Delco model?

I still don't understand why they discontinued the AGM battery as I wanted to replace it with like kind. But they said this Pro series is the new replacement.
