Genuine GM Tune-Up Items

12495519 – GMPP red spark plug wire set – 52.92
12571164 – GM AC Delco Iridium spark plugs – 5.88 each
10287788 – 97 & 98 fuel filter – 10.80

Are these the best plugs and wires and is this the cheapest around? Thanks for answering these easy questions. Im a noob still when it comes to tuneups.

Is Gene the cheapest around when it comes to buying spark plugs and wires? I cant find any other good pricing. HELP!

Blown 346 has a good list of things that should be done, depending on when they were done last. Get your parts from Gene at GMPartsHouse. I recently installed the plugs/wires/fuel filter from him and yes, he is about the cheapest around for GM parts.

Find a shop that specializies in Corvettes. Just ask around or check with your local Vette club.

Are these the right parts for a stock setup for a 98? If so I will order them today!

Mechanic should be good I think, dealerships tend to assume you dont price check in my experience... took my last car to the dealer and they said my trans was leaking and wanted 5800 for a new one... I laughed and took it back and checked for myself, fluid was not one drop underfilled and the trans was the cleanest part of the car and they definatly did not clean it!! That was a mitsu dealer though but dealers are mostly the same in my experience.

Some shops are horrible too, I know one where they routienly charge to replace parts that they just repaint and do a quick fix on and sell you your own used parts back to you as new ones.. Know one place that has quite a few times forgotten to put drain/fill plugs back on to transmissions etc and then tried to avoid responsability. Ask around and get more than one persons opinion on a particular shop.

Check and or replace Serpentine belt

Check and or replace Clutch fluid if needed
You cant forget about the blinker fluid.
I believe blinker fluid should be changed every 10,000 mile.

Man the local Stealership wants $440 just for labor on the plug wire and fuel filter installation. That is crazy high!

Yeah they are smoking crack. There has to be a vette shop in your area or a high performance place that can do this nearby. I could change your plug wires and fuel filter in 30 minutes with hand tools in a garage.

And yes Gene does have the best prices.

Go to the Regional Forum and ask who in your area is a good C5 mechanic or dealership.

I live in Norman, OK amd have the best/worst of both worlds stealershipwise. Mark Heitz Chevy calls itself "OKLAHOMA'S CORVETTE CAPITAL". They do move a lot of new and used vettes and their service department has a wall full of very happy vette owners letters. We also have several good vette, etc. tuners in the OKC area. Jim at SW Tuning being one of the best! That is the best part. The worst part is knowing how to get the "fairest" labor charges for routine services. Heitz and the tuners can both do better explaining their labor rates to non wrench turners like me! Good luck with your choice. OK OK OK Max, let's go throw the training Pheasant,,,,AGAIN! Damn she is a great dog! Don't deserve her but,,,,OK OK OK

I had a tick to mine last fall that I figured was maybe a pushrod or lifter, so since I was still under warranty I went to the dealer. They "said" it was a loose spark plug (didn't check those so who knows) and charged me about $85 to tighten it up... That was my last trip there.
