Default Fast ride in light rain on the Autobahn

I like to share with you this little video I made (click) during a ride on the German Autobahn in light rain. I reached speeds of some 130 mph, which may be faster than many people want to drive under such conditions. Still, consider my ride safe (also for others on the road) and there was a substantial safety margin. Still, I only recommend sufficiently skilled drivers to drive like this.

Finally, I obeyed all traffic rules including the speed limits (where they existed) and especially I passed on the left hand side only, as is mandatory on the Autobahn.

What do you think?

Thanks, Robert

How fast have you gone when it's dry?

Hi Robert,

Interesting video. I also liked your GPS, what kind is it? I would be a little nervous in the rain myself. I've never been especially trusting of any of the tires I personally have had, to drive at that speed in the rain.

Indulge me, but your video reminded me of my first assignment in Germany at Rhine-Mein AB. Within an hour of landing I was standing on the balcony of the Rhine-Mein hotel when at least 5 cars became entangled on the Autobahn that passes by the base. I couldn't see them, but I heard the crashes.

Thanks for sharing the video.

Robert

If it had been dry I would have gone up to some 150 mph because of the curves, provided there is not too much traffic. At that speed, I also would not pass somebody driving at substantially lower speeds (for instance 60 mph) in the next lane.

Robert (MisterC) thanks for your remark. The GPS is an "old" Navman ICN 630. Its a little slow with small memory for today's standards. The plan was to use it to show the speed, but the numbers turned out blury.

I've not run the Vette down the Autobahns but I did drive the Camaro back from Italy a few years ago. Its limited at 120 so that was all I could do. Amazing how safe it is when everyone's disciplined in their lanes. Drivers just expect it.

Wouldn't want to try that in the US with Granny in the outside lane at 45

I remember my days on the Autobahn and doing 100 or so in the middle lane in our Audi and getting passed like I was standing still by more cars than I passed

Having driven extensively through Germany and much of Europe, I am continually impressed with driver discipline and courtesy not seen here in the US. I generally feel safer in Europe at high speed than here in the US behind some bozo in the fast lane going 30 mph.

I drove there for 3+ years while I was in the military. I had a 1975 Mercedes 280CE and it was a great car! I envy anyone getting the chance to let loose the Corvette there. I would love to get my Z06 on those roads just once. Very cool video.

You are absolutely out of your mind frickin crazy!

I love to go fast but not in the rain and if I had been a passenger in your car, you would be neutered! That was scary even in the video! (But then I'm a girl so I'm sure all the men love it)

Glad your still around.

That is a cool video! Your kahonies are much larger than mine since hydroplaining can occur at speeds higher than 60mph depending on tire condition. A "rain snake" could have created havoc at those speeds!!

It must be nice being able to drive on highways where competent drivers respect the laws, etiquette, and eachother.

If you had been a passenger in my car, slowing down would have come with a pricetag

Just kidding, of course. Still, sometimes we guys should listen more carefully to our girl - there might be a reason why women outlive us.

I'm using Bosch Aerotwin wipers that have spoilers over the whole length. OEM wipers don't work at that speed.
