Have you actually bought a (new) performance car in the last 20 years? I don't even think my 84 Z28 had white letter tires.

Since when are 40 series tires not low profile?

A 12 inch wide 40 series racing tire will have a 4.8 inch sidewall. A ten inch wide 40 series street tire will have a 4.0 inch sidewall.

The sidewall height is a function of the width of the tire measured in percent. A wider low profile tire will have a taller sidewall than a thinner tire. The proportions are the same.
