I have a Canon S2 digital camera. I bought it for a few reasons:
12X zoom: Once you have this, you won't go back to the 3X cameras
Swivel LCD panel: I can't count how many times I had to hold the camera up in the air (parades & such) and being able to pivot the screen is a Godsend.
Excellent movies: The movies rival those of a camcorder - excellent clarity (640 x 480) and sound
Batteries last forever: I don't even need rechargeables, since alkaline AA batteries last so long.
This is a 5 megapixel camera, but don't let that fool you. It rivals 8 megapixel cameras for a lower cost. Canon also has the S3 (black, instead of silver body), which is a 6 megapixel camera.
Neither are small, but the 12X zoom REALLY comes in handy when you can't get close enough.

I picked up a Cannon Power Shot SD 630 and love it! Perfect size for throwing into a pocket, takes great quality pictures, video is sharp, and it's easy to use, and has a 3" LCD. I just took a look and you can pick them up for about $250.
With my 1 GB memory stick I can get 45min of video (low quality) or 8 min of video (hi quality) and/or 9,000 pics (low quality) or 500 pics (high quality).
I have taken mine camping, hiking, racing, pretty much everywhere and am very happy with the results this far. Let me know if you wanna see some of the good shots...

since the computer screen does not need hardly any resolution
at all to display a good picture. And you can get decent prints on
paper up to about 8X10 with such a camera.
A 5-8 Megapixel camera is really only needed if you wanted to
blow up your pictures and print them on paper in sizes of 11X14
and larger. But it's a moot point now since now you can buy
6 Megapixel cameras for $125 now.
My advice would be to buy a cheap little mini-dv video camera for
around $200-250..probably something like a canon zr-500
or 600....and then buy any photo camera for $100
And you'll still be in your total price range.
But if you want just one camera to stick in your pocket then
the above poster is probably right on w/ Cannon Power Shot SD 630

Megapixels are important but if you are only making 4x6 or 5x7 prints, 4 megapixels is plenty. What DOES make the difference is the lens. That is true on ANY camera. If going with a long zoom, look for stabilization or you will need a tripod for best results. Look for a quality lens. Canon, Olympus, even Kodak upper level dig cameras are ok. I use an Oly EOS 500 my self but it was app. $500. Just check the quality of lens since most makers use the same type of filmware.

The advantage of high megapixels is the abilitry to crop without losing quality. I am using a Canon Powershot SD 550...love the compact size & photo quality.

I have the Sony Cybershot H5 also. This is an excellent camera with a Carl Ziess lens, 12x optical zoom, 3" lcd screen plus an optical viewfinder.

I've used very expensive digital cameras and some pretty cheap ones. An 8 mega pixel and a 3 m/pixel. I am hard pressed to tell the difference with the 'older technology' digital and new technology.
I agree with earlier post. - get a mini-dv video (could likely find a good TRV 25, 27, or 33 by Sony) on the cheap - great camera for DV editing. In fact it uses mem stick and can take 800 x 600 "stills" that aren't that bad.
.
.
These were all made using the camera below. Picked it up at Walmart. One of the cheapest around. $100 total investment!

I just bought a Canon SD700 IS which has image stabilization. I think it helps even in daylight the pictures come out with less blur and cleaner. They have the newer SD800 IS which has a wider 28mm lens for a wider angle shot so you don't have to back up so far. Sony and Panasonic also make cameras with image stabilization. It's something worth thinking about, I find it makes a big difference. Pixels count because you can crop pictures (zoom in) without too much loss of picture detail. canon powershot. You will spend a little less, approximately 215.00, and it's very small. Look up the prices on www.bizrate.com

If you just want it for car shows zoom is not important, look for a model that has a wide angel lens built in, they usually don’t have a lot of zoom. This way it is easier to get the whole car in teh shot without have to back away then have someone walk in front of you.

I have a HP507. Great little camera for taking snaps and its rechargeable which is a big plus
The quality's not there for serious photography though. With the 7+ Megapixel cameras out there I'd be looking for something better if I was serious about photography.

I'm currently using a Nikon S2 and a tripod . It's pretty old camera, but the photo quality is good enough and it fits well in my pocket..
These pics were taken with the S2..
Anyway, I'm going to buy a new camera in a few months.
