Default Rear end loose on Autobahn

I have my 2000 hardtop with me in Germany and it seems to have a loose rear end. I've never raced my vette but have driven it fast on the Autobahn (157 mph). When I returned from my deployment I found I can't get up to 120 mph without feeling scared as the car is loose. Any ideas???

What condition are the rear tires?

What are the street conditions you are driving on?

Both of these will affect the feeling you describe.

I get that same feeling in my rear when I go that fast also. I have found that if you go use the bathroom before a fast drive, I will feel better.

Rear end could also be out of alignment. Rear toe could easily do this. If the car is lowered, some people have reported instability at high speed. I'm betting on alignment though. Very dangerous, have it checked out and report the findings here.

Maybe what you're really scared of is losing your license?

Maybe you should look at the poster saying he is in Germany.

were you, or are you, currently in germany? you start by saying you have your 00' with you, but then say when you returned from your tour...that you can't get it up.

Yes, my car has been lowered and yes I'm still in Germany. The tires are brand new. I'm headed back to the grand ole US of A in July to prepare for life after the military (20 yrs in the Air Force) but don't want to wait until then to get the alignment checked. Guess I'll be forking over some Euros...

When you fork over those euros make sure they check the rake as well.

Just off the top of my head here, but are the front shocks new and the backs old? Is the *** end squatting and taking air off of it?

Not sure how old the shocks are as I've only had it a 1.5 yrs. However, it sits exactly as it did when I bought it and not squatting.

Um.. maybe you should look at the following part of his post:

When I returned from my deployment

which would indicate that he is (or was) back in the States, yes?

Unless he is stationed in Germany, and was deployed somewhere else...

Hope you find out what the problem is. Going that speed, I'd be too if the back end felt loose.

Give the guy a break

Being stationed overseas doesn't stop us military types being sent to sandy places with "great beaches but no sea". It just seems that the natives are not so friendly. TDYs to Afghanistan and Iraq are pretty frequent right now, even from Germany.

My bet on the handling would be the aerodynamics if the car has been lowered. Are your air dams under the nose OK? If they are cracked or broken it may affect the high speed handling.

For clarification: I'm currently stationed in Germany and this was my home 1.5 yrs before my most recent deployment. Something dramatic has happened as I was doing 157 mph before with no problems and now all of a sudden the car feels really loose around 120 mph....hence I don't go over 85 mph now. Air dams are fine. I want/need to get her checked but there's no Chevy dealers around here. I may have to keep her in the garage until she's ready for her trip back to the states in April or take her to a local reputable garage aound the base and see what they say.

I also agree with R Devil...we def need an autobahn in the states! Maybe I'll run for office after I retire and get the first American one built in Texas...
