Lets talk Synthic manual Transmission fluid
Ok.. so my understanding is gm developed this great stuff called syncromesh... not only great in GM cars, but well nearly every car..
GM
Ok... so next on the agenda is Paper Blocking Rings.. To be honest i've never done a tranny rebuild myself.. So i'm actually not even sure what these are but i keep hearing everyone that knows about them cry that you can't use a synthic fluid in those trannies because well. Most syns have some water in them... The paper rings will absorb the water and swell ... based on these types of responses i've gathered swelling = bad...
HOWEVER, if the fluid/oil is silicon based it's ok...
NOW HOW IN THE HECK DO YOU FIND OUT WHAT IT"S MADE OF!!!!!!
I want to use Royal purple or AMS version of syncromesh.. but i idk if i can use them...
lil help please..
I have a 1998..
PS... i will be linking this to my other thread/poll on which fluid is best..

I just put Royal Purple in over the weekend in my 99'. I was going through the same questions. I'm happy with it and I guess only time will tell now.
The 2 versions I have heard
1) the carbon fiber rings are only in 2001 and newer
2) the carbon fiber rings are in all t56 from 1997 and newer
I gave up on who to believe and just put the stuff in.

ok.. i went back and did another search.. found the same threads... I found the post you are referring to and again read it.. Nope.. no charts or answer to my question... However i noted that there was this link above the post..
http://www.ls2.com/forums/showthread...threadid=13161
the post it's self is just a repeat of what is found on this board by doing a seach for paper blocking rings..
but if you read down he starts to answer individual questions regarding brands.. Not sure how he was doing his research but seems legit..
Royal purple is non-hydroscopic .. so it's ok to use in all years
mobil one = non-hydroscopic
Redline = hydroscopic

AMSOIL does make a synchromesh fluid, the AMSOIL Synthetic Synchromesh Transmission Fluid (MTF), but probably because GM requires a fluid meeting Dexron III fluids for the T56 applications in GM vehicles, AMSOIL recommends using the ATF vice the synchromesh. Interestingly, AMSOIL recommends the Synthetic Manual Transmission and Transaxle Gear Lube 75W-90 API GL-4 for the T56 in the SRT-10 Viper, again probably because Dodge recommends a gear lube vice an ATF.

2000 C5's and older have paper lined blocking rings. 2001 and newer all run compressed carbon blocking rings. Final answer.
