Default The Grond Chronicles : LS1 & LS2, Side by Side <Pics> [Dialup; Cardiac Arrest

I thought it might be useful to other members if they saw the differences between the LS1 block and the LS2 block, and to point out the potential pitfalls if you are building an LS2 from scratch.

So I unshipped my new LS2 bare block tonight to compare and contrast between the LS1 block and the LS2 block.

A C5 General First!

Enjoy

EG

Firstly, huge thanks to Stangkiller for bringing back my LS1 block - the original Grond engine.

Warning : Garage Queens may wish to avert their eyes..

Yes folks, a C5 can haul parts...

Good fit

OK. Let's get this bad boy unshipped

On with the comparo

LS1 valley with knock sensors and ineffecient oil drainback design

You can see the fundamentally different valley on the LS2.
Knock sensors are gone from the valley (relocated to the side) and oil drainback is much improved

Here, the LS1 cam sensor and oil pressure fittings

And here, the LS2 cam sensor is moved to the front

Many changes on the front.
Note: oil plugs in block

Some of the changes are interesting, like the smaller oil galley on the top, the 2 tapped holes for the LS2 timing chain tensioner
Note: new oil plugs for the block need to be bought otherwise massive oil leak on first fire!

Rear view.

Mustn't forget - New dowels and oil plug to buy and install
And Made in Canada

Dowels for heads to either transplant or buy new. I prefer to buy new.

Note, awesome oil passage change for the lifters!!

Lest we forget this is a LS2!!!

Here, water jacket plug and oil plug to either remove and transplant or buy new.

I prefer new. Don't forget lots of Locktite Red

Great pics!!!! Is the block already machined for the knock sensors on the side? Also, don't forget about adjusting the oil pickup tube.

Awesome pics Stephen!!

The LS2 looks so much beefier than the LS1. I still love my LS1 though and won't give it up till it goes Grond.

Brand new bare block, took the wrapping off it 2 hours ago

LOTS of machine work to be done on it - not just knock sensors

Great write up EG!I love looking at bare motors and see how it looks inside!

ok, now for some small talk...what do you mean by "unship?" how come you didnt say "unpack?" If you unship a package then it means you bonked the fedex guy over the head with your bologne and took back your package that you were going to send out.

I have nothing useful to add to this thread, but I wanted to get a post in on page one of an EG/Grond thread. I've never done it before!!!

Kidding aside, those are really cool pics to compare the two. Can't wait to see what else you find.

That was interesting. When does the engine build start? Yes. I know. There's still allot of other things to do first.
