Default Horn switch -what causes it to 'honk'

my horn has only once in a great while actually functioned by pressing the steering wheel.

I currently have my steering column apart to replace my turnsignal multi function switch. THis also houses the brass pin? that i think makes the horn honk. WHen I removed the assembly from the column the horn went off until I put the unit back on.

Now there is a brass or copper ring around the back of the steering wheel that appears to be where this pin presses up against. The ring was covered in grease (preventing electrical contact?).

Anyway can someone give me the basic info on the horn?

WHen i honk the horn, how is the switch triggered?

I am having a problem with my horn too. On a rare occasion it will honk when I press either of the two horn icons but 99% of the time it doesn't work.

case closed:

I had to replace the turn signal multifunction switch for a faulty turn signal issue. The horn switch also runs through this assembly. The new unit is in and horn works fine. Got it CHEAP at fred beans ;-D

Thanks for the update. My multifunction switch workes perfectly. Do you think that maybe when you took the column apart you did something on the reassembly that now allows the horn to work?
