Question about the LS1's

From the point of in the "seat of the pants" you mean? I have a 97 (ealry LS1 numbers above) and have driven the newer LS1 and really didn't notice anything (if anything the torque increase) 5 HP is not noticable.
The newer LS1 engines 01 and up used the LS6 intake and LS6 block with the same internals - the oil passages internal are different from old to new as well as the cams (with the exception of the 00' model that had a unique cam grind that year only)
Basically (and some will argue) that the cam grind and intake manifold are the reasons for the increase...I want to say they also changed the exhaust manifold design to a cast iron type as well...I read they did this because the early manifolds took too long to weld in production.

In most track tests I've seen a read about, the 01-04 appears to be a couple of tenths faster in the 1/4 mile than the 97-00. One of the reasons I picked up an 01 is because of this. A well driven 6 speed might benefit from it moreso than the A4's. The A4's only went from 350 to 360 torque.

5hp is no big deal considering you can gain/loose 5hp with the weather/temperature. 25 lbs of torque is noticable. However, I hear the LS1 engine block is alot stronger in terms of modification capabilities.

But at the engine itself, very little noticiable difference.

The only reason the 01's+ are faster is because of the LS6 intake and better exhaust manifold's.
Picking up a 97 over a 01 leave's more mod money to easily erase the 01's .1-.2 tenth advantage

Honestly I don't see how some people never get bored of flying down that straight track over and over again, but to each his own. I just want a car that's fun to drive.
for me... its just a great place to go WOT without having to worry about cops!!

IMO the above makes the car a LOT more fun to drive.

I can't see the tranmission in the A4 robbing just thoses 2 things to that extent.
After 98 Gm started screwing around with the cam specs of the LS1. In 01 Gm went with the LQ9 truck cam to better enhance low end torque.
Numbers don't lie. I pulled a 13.3 at 106 bone stock with my 97. She dyno'd 294rwhp, 307rwtq a week before that 1/4th run.
