Default How to get rid of "kidney shake"?

O.K. I'm new to Vette ownership myself but not the automotive world. I love my '01 vert and do whatever it takes to keep it in great shape. This car is like a child.. you always love it but at times you want to just knock the living mess out of it. At high speed, there is a surging vibration coming from the back. The stealership claimed they balanced it before I drove it off the lot. Being somewhat intelligent, I took their assurances with a huge grain of salt. And had static and dynamic balances done on all four tires at a reputable tire shop I've been dealing with for years. I still have a vibration in the left rear. Anybody else have this problem or know of a solution?

Thanks,
John

Check the balance again. Also, check the rim runout. It may be bent or you may have a bad tire.

Make sure they strip off all the old weights too before rebalancing. Most will just try to add weight which may or may not cure your problem - usually not.

ever check the rotors back there...... it has spinning mass , and if that is out of balance, anything you do off the car wont take that into consideration.......

Maybe a wheel bearing is going out?

I did a dynamic balance which spins the wheels up to high speed for balancing while it's mounted on the car. I have put some miles onthe car since and need to replace the cheap rotors that are wearing out. Thanks for the idea. I'm off to spend more money my wife won't know about.....

Since you have checked the balancing pretty well,I would tend to agree here.

Seems you may have a little increased noise or hum too at that speed.no?

I'm wondering if you have a warped rear rotor.

You may also want to have the wheel checked for being bad. Could be bent.

I understand the "torque tube" has vibration isolators that sometimes go bad.

I'll never forget a comment someone made in a class related to dynamics...........

" you can balance an egg but you'll never make it roll straight"

My 91 C4 had low speed vibe from a flat spot I caused in a slide,,,, and set up a vibration around 65mph..... I found the flat spot by using the process below......then I bought new tires

some people refer to "dynamic balancing" as the spinning machine off the car and "static balance" as bubble balance off the car.

If you did an on the spindle balance then you took the rotor into acount....

soooo.... as mentioned in other posts.......

bad Rim, slightly bent spindle , tire slightly out....

I went through the same issue on a car i had a while back and swapped from steel to alum rims and the problem went away..... not to say this is your problem but you can check it with something simple if you can get it in the air.

if you jig something fastened to the ground and lay it against the tire and see if the runout is bad, i would say 1/4" could cause this vibration..

soory abt being so long winded but this problem had me very frustrated in the past and I feel your aggravation,,,,,,,

good luck and let us know what you find

Rick

Thanks all. I have no problem reading long winded logical replies... especially when they help. If only the stealership could be this helpful! Come to find out, the rim is bad... and expensive too. Somebody lobby congress to give us military guys a well deserved raise. As my uncle states in www.askuncleralph.com (he's the dear abbey of trailer trash), a bent rim is good for using as a flower pot or to hold up the old broke down pick up in the front yard. Guess what my next house hold upgrade will be!

Sounds like something is out of round, wheel or tire.
