NJ has a wonderful law that makes it illegal to pump your own gas. Last night the goon who was pumping my gas couldn’t get a good angle on things and while he was twisting things around, he cracked the plastic housing around the filler neck.

Can someone help me out with a part # for this piece? Also, does anyone know whether it can be installed without removing the quarter panel, either through the gas door, or from the interior? I sure hope so.

I'd drive over to PA or NY to fillup.. No way do I want someone else to pump my gas. In addition to the auto-fill stopping after only a few gals - I like to do these things myself...

Sure is: N.J.S.A. 34:3A-4 reads: "The purpose of this bill is to continue the current 40-year old ban on self-service pumping of gasoline and to strengthen safety standards imposed on retail gasoline stations. The bill prohibits the dispensing of gasoline by anyone other than station attendants who have received specific instructions regarding the procedures for safely dispensing fuel and have had practical experience dispensing fuel under the direct supervision of an experienced operator for one full working day."

you have got to be kidding. you cant pump you own gas. i wouldnt make it there very long.

Boy have things changed! When I was young "full service" was the norm because no one wanted to pump their own gas. And it didn't cost an extra $.40/gal or whatever in the few places you can find full service today(except NJ of course).

I agree - stupid law. Some stations let me get away with pumping my own gas when I am in an antiuque car, but they stand to receive huge fines if caught. And believe it or not, gas prices really aren't that bad compared to nearbyself-serve states.

Anyway, can anyone help with the part # or installation?

.....wow. Guess the station attendant didn't have enough "practical experience" pumping gas yet.....he'll probably need to return to "gas pumping school" for additional intense specific instruction & recertification. He wasn't by chance also smoking during the incident was he?

So you get a 16 year old kid on minimum wage with a days training pumping gas instead of someone who has driven cars for years.

WOW I have heard of crazy laws, but this might just make the top ten dumb list. I wonder what incident cause the dumb politicians to vote this law into effect.

My vette is special and I want it treated that way, BUTTTTTTTTTTT my 68 Camaro that I bought new in March of 1968 is past being special. NO ONE will tough or pump or repair or anything else to it. If it gets messed with or messed up it will be me, than I can only be mad at me.

If you log onto GM Parts Direct.

Go to the parts catalogue and look at the body section. Go into the "Quarter" sub section and the fuel filler parts are listed. The guard is listed for Coupes and Hardtops. Didnt see one immediately for a Vert but they look very similar. Its #3 on the picture.

As another aside, in April of 1995, I picked up my 1966 Corvette. I had bought it in January in mid-resto, and the restoration was completed in April. Anyway, drove out of the shop, made it maybe 1 mile and stopped for a fill-up. Anyone who's filled a midyear knows there's a lot of paint between the pump and the neck. Well that particular goon spilled what seemed like a gallon of gas all over my week-old $3500 paint job, which was a fortune for paint at the time. Just a regular thing in NJ.

Actually the law, albeit worded to prevent self-serve, truely prevents massive surcharges to those that cannot or choose not to pump their own gas (e.g. our elderly parents, handicaped, etc).

I was in NY/Long Island over the holidays, and a 'full serve' pump costs $1.20 MORE than the self serve pump for the same gas.

Think about the impact to our elderly/fixed income folks. It's hiway rape...

Also, oddly enough, gas in NJ is no more/or not much more expensive than the self-serve pumps in ajoining states, go figure...

So, personnally I NEVER want to see the NJ law go away...

BTW, I ALWAYS pump my own gas in NJ too. I just pull up, tell the attendant (typically a guy with difficulty in speaking english anyway) it's a Corvette, Corvette people are strange, and I always pump it myself. Voila, I get to do it myself.

I can only remember once being told I could not, in broken english of course. I just left.

i live here in nj.I PUMP MY OWN FUEL.no one comes near my car.FWIW,you can pump your own here in nj.the towel heads may say something,but just ignore them since they can't speak english anyway.
