Default Stock C5 or stock GTO

Any one ever raced their stock C5 97-2000 aginst a stock GTO. I've heard dealers say that it will smoke 97-2000 C5 becasue their rated at 345 hp and the GTO is rated at 405. Maybe it's their slaes pitch.

The 2004 model GTO has the LS1. The 2005 model GTO has the LS2, same as the C-6.
Not sure which one would win, not sure I'd even care.

Well, no matter, I still vote for the C5: My favorite car for overall looks and performance value.

I can't speak about the 05 but an 04 at the track was running lowto mid 14's to my 13.5. I don't know if it was a manual or auto or if the driver was inexperienced but He made a poor showing for an LS1. My stock 87 L98 does 14.4. I hear great things about the 05 GTO however and I have seen some 05's at the shows that have aftermarket body kits, scoops, "Judge"stripes and spoilers, etc that look pretty nice. The 04 just looks like a larger Cavalier and despite the LS1 is dissapointing to me.

My opinion is the GTO looks just like any other car. When it first came out it had single exhaust and no hood scoop. The GTO's of the sixties stood out. The had the look. This thing they call the GTO i just don't care for. And they put a LS1 engine in it also...What a shame...just my opinion.

Your first guess was right. Part sales pitch, part ...but then the two are generally so hard to tell apart from one another!

The GTO is a great option for somebody who wants a high performance family car, but to even attempt to compare it to the Corvette is just plain ignorant. They are two very different cars. But then again, most sales people are very good at telling customers just what they want to hear...

while by no means a lightweight in terms of performance, at a glance the gto looks like a 1,000,000 other pontiac sedans or coupes or fleet cars. i don't believe anyone will ever look at a corvette and conclude that it looks like the ubiquitous mass of fleet cars. bub

Leave it to this forurm to turn a "Whos faster" question into one about styling.

doesn't the GTO weigh a whole bunch more than the C5? Even with added HP I am not sure it would make up the difference in weight.

To me the GTO is like putting an LS1 in a cavalier. Who cares how that car runs it still looks like a cavalier.

This is for the six speed manual.

Car and Driver has the 2005 GTO, 13.3 107mph in the qtr mile. .88 on the skid pad. Top speed 158 govener limited.

It has the LS2 400HP, and weighs 3787, 3.46 rear end with 17" BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDWS, 245/45ZR-17.

So there are some specs for comparison. Looks fairly even on a drag race, on a road course I would say the C5 would tear it up.

Raced a LS-1 GTO in my old '99 and took him and he was a much more experienced drag racer. he got me off the line but I chased him down. Probably be a good race against a LS-2 if you had a skilled driver.
