Default Chrome Alternators

Where do you get them and how much. I viewed the Ecklers for 900, thats not going to happen. I could always take it apart and send it off but I dont know how much it will cost plus corvette down time.

Thanks,
Bob

Hey Bob,

I went through the same thing, major sticker shock at the prices of aftermarket chrome/polished alternators. Take it off yourself, take it to an alternator/starter rebuild shop and have them disassemble it for you. I got mine most of the way apart and then found 3 big honkin wires that were soldered on to the main section. There was no way I was going to get them off let alone back on so I took it to a professional. He finished my disassembly on the spot and kept the internals. I took the housing to a local chrome shop. They had it for 3 days and charged me 50.00 bucks. Took it back the my alternator guy and later that day picked it up. He charged me 30.00 bucks. Total cost 80.00 dollars and 4 days down time.

Hope this helps.

Take care.

You would be surprised where there are chrome shops. But incase you can not find one local check the TN area....kick butt chrome comes out of TN.

I totally agree Zdriver about taking it to an alternator shop. There are several locations inside the alternator that need to make contact with the inner parts. If those contacts are not made the alternator is toast.

Well, I guess I am the fortunate one, don't know what kind of a response you were expecting from that post. I was simply answering his questions. Sorry to hear about your lack of customizing shops in Celina.

ZDriver;

I see in your pics that the chromed surface of your alternator is glass smooth... and not matte like the factory finish is.

Did you have to perform any surface prep (polishing) to get such a smooth finish ?

Polishing is the major part of the chroming process.Think of it as the bodywork before the paint job.

Anything you see chrome with a mirror-like finish has been highly polished first, and often re-polished again between the three stages of the plating process.

This is why chrome plating is expensive and time-consuming.

zdriver, I think you took my comment in a way I did not intend.

BTW, have you ever considered, having people send you their stock Alt's and return to them a piece of Art, like you have on your car?

I would imagine a service such as that, would generate quite abit of intrest on the board.

I KNOW I would be very intrested.........

ZDriver.
Wow! That's the cheapest and fastest turn around I've ever heard of for chroming an alternator.
I would love to send you one if you could have it done at that price!

I am in.

I bet if GP were done at the price in mid winter when many Vettes are tucked in for winter, that 50 posters here would take part.

Don't know too many local chrome shops with 3 day down time...most are at least a month if not more. Unless you already paid your dues.....meaning already bought a couple of bricks for their building...
