$300 Seat Belt Repair: Does This Sound Right 2U?
Hey guys,
Quick question. My passenger seat belt wont unspool (from the bottom). It got twisted in there and now it's stuck.
I took it to a dealer service bay near where I work, and the estimate just came in. They said they have to replace the whole thing for 300 dollars. Seems kinda pricey for a tangled seatbelt.
Any of you go through that? Is this something I can fix myself (Im very mechanically UN-inclined)? They said with a safety part like that they have parameters about what they can fix vs replace. Seems like it would be easy to repair the part, but I dont know anything about the mysterious inner workings of seatbelts.
Any advice? Should I just pay the money?
Thanks!~~~~Patrick

Automotive seatbelts and airbags have a lifetime warranty. I think it is mandated by federal law.

Hope it will be covered under warranty. Haven't had anything happen to mine so I don't know if the price is right or not.

Good luck.

I think that's true. A few years ago, I took my '93 civic in with 239K miles and they replaced the seatbelts for free. Lifetime warranty.
2 years ago, I took my C4 in with 150K and they replaced my seatbelt for free cause it wouldn't spool in.
I'd check with another dealer.

WOW!!! I cant believe so many people have said to take it in. . . cmon guys!!! Just take the panel off at the seat belt and unspool it yourself. It isnt very hard AT ALL! I did it in about 20 minutes and dont know that much about cars in the first place. If you wanna pay money, just come over to my house, I will do it for 299.99
Best of luck to ya!

Hey, thanks everyone!
I appreciate all the great suggestions and info.
THXBABY, that link was perfect! I printed it out and am taking that with me to show the dealer service guy in the morning. Looks like the problem I had was EXACTLY what the recall was about. Looks like a few of you experienced it too.
As for suggestions to do it myself, I was wondering how hard that would be. Thanks! I didnt examine it very closely. The dealer service rep made it sound incredibly hard for them to fix it....weird, eh? He even had to "order" the part! Sounds like this should definitely either be covered by that recall or at least by the seatbelt replacement law thingy.
Here is why I probably WONT ever go back to this particular dealer for service, even tho it is right down the street from my office. At 5:00PM they called to say the car was ready. The part was on order and I had them do an alignment while they had it since I lowered it 3 weeks ago. So they said they could send the shuttle guy down the street to pick me up to come get my car.
So an hour or so goes by while Im waiting for the guy to call saying he is out front. After a while I call the dealer to ask if they remembered me. The lady said the service guys all left at 6:00PM and the cars are all locked up. GAH!
SO I have to either cab it home tonight (It's already 11:00PM) or beg a coworker to drive me. Then have to have my GF drive me all the way back here to Glendale in the morning to get the car.
If they would have told me they were shutting down, I could have WALKED there in time to get the car earlier. Now Im without my BABY for the first night since I bought her. I feel....empty inside.
EEGYAD!!!!
Anyways, thanks again CF gang for coming through with the much needed info! I wish I was the kind of guy that could give shoddy service people holy heck, but Im sure I'll weeny out and just politely thank them for screwing me over today.

When my X-son in law bought his 1998 convertible, the passenger seat belt was twisted and wouldn't come out. I spent about 30 minutes working with it, and untwisted the belt. It has worked great since.

Took mine in to the Stealership last year and they replaced w/o charge. However, it happened again last week....I did it myself. All of about 20 minutes or so.
