Default Column locked at the worst place...

I was in a fast food drive through last week and I noticed a few cars backing out. So I backed out as well. A manager was outside saying that there was a car with problems at the window and the drive through was closed. I looked around the corner and it was a C5. I went over and talked to him. He said he turned his car off... used the keys to open the glove compartment to get his wallet... then service column lock problem. I tried to help but there was not much I could do. I tried jerking the wheel around but no luck. He said he called a flat-bed tow truck... but there was no way it could get in. C5 by the store window... 90 degree turn immediately in front and behind. I don't have an ending because I had to get to work.

I am one of those who is still driving around hoping it won't happen to me. Where can I buy a CLB and for how much?

ThunderRacing.com and Corvettes of Houston sell CLB. It's a good investment, 'cause no place is a good spot for column lock to happen!

That would be a terrible place to have the column lock happen. Just don't let it happen to you - get the CLB. I got mine from Thunder Racing.

may be a stupid question, but how do I know if it was installed from the previous owner or not? Obviously I could try to MAKE it lock.....but I really don't want to if I don't have to!

With the key pulled, see if the wheel will lock. If it doesn't, then the CLB is installed. If it does, YOU'RE PLAYING WITH FIRE!

Get in your car, put your key in ignition, and turn it to the on position. If you hear a little *vrrt* from the steering column area then yours is still active.

When I got my car, only 3 mo ago, The owner pointed out a sticker saying it was from the Dealer on the lock "Recall" Not being a Corvette expert, I didn't know. I have a MN6 2000, but it does seem to lock, with the "virt" noise....Sounds like I need the Lock Bypass, Right? The whole thing sounds a bit scary, Thanks for any advice.

Just did my first oil change at the dealer. I was anxious to have the car checked for this recall notice. I was dumbstruck to learn my 04 Z16 has no issuses...so they say!
I thought all C5's had the problem!

You guys should read this thread if you have not all ready.

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...483&forum_id=1

Your 04 Z16 is a 6 speed so the column could lock. On the newer automatic cars, I think 2002+ there is no column lock issue.

Also, if you have an MN6, install the CLB, DO NOT get the latest GM recall as all that does is program the computer to shut the fuel off if the column locks.....AND if you have the latest GM recall on your MN6 and then install the CLB, you could still get stranded, not from the column locking, but if your CLB looses sync with the computer, then your fuel will be shut off and your stuck anyway.

Yes, you need it. I put one in last week and it was easy. The toughest part is getting the dash panel back into place (a little patience is needed.) The CLB cost me 50 bucks from Corvettes of Houston. You never know when the stupid thing will lock up. My '98 only has 18,800 miles, and I thought that it would be fine. Well, it locked on me big time. My next call was to Houston!

I bought the GM Harness K. It's GM's equivelent to the CLB but they only install it in the A4. So you can get one from GM Parts Direct for $65 or there abouts.

No.....for a married guy.....in front of the girlfriend's house after a quickie would have been the "worst place".....

I installed the CLB from Corvettes of Houston last night on our '01 MN6 Coupe. It took me a little longer than I expected because I had a bit of trouble with the inside temperature sensor to the right of the column. I just couldn't get it to pop out of the dash correctly after removing the torx screw. Altogether it took about an hour, but it was no big deal. Knowing I won't have the dang thing lock up on me again is a great feeling.

If it's not already happened to you, listen to the Forum gang. Install the CLB now, not later.

Greg
