Default What is an AutoX?

I ask because there is one tomorrow in the next town over and I emailed the guy who made the post in the regions forum but I think he already left and I don't want to miss it if it is something I can go watch or see. This is one in Marina, CA on Sunday April 3. If you can supply some info I appreciate it. Thanks,

Jim Kay

Driving as fast as you can between cones in a parking lot (short version).

Here's some info on autocrossing.

That about sums it up. An Autox or Autocross is a timed single car race on a closed course. The course usually consits of straights, turns and slaloms through cones in a parking lot. Most I've seen will run three sessions of two laps each and the best (lowest) cumulative time wins. There are generally several classes for car types and skill levels.

You really need to go. If you are uncomfortable running your car you can watch. There is usually no entry fee but you usually need to sign a liability waiver. Talk to some of the drivers and don't be afraid to ask questions. Most autocrossers are very helpful and may even offer to allow you to ride with them on a run. It's not hard on your car. Maybe the tires, a little, but it's loads of fun. Enjoy.

Most fun you can legally have in a parking lot!! Go watch, better yet give them your $35 and take a few runs!

WOW, outstanding. It does sound fun and now if I can just find out where they are holding it, I will definitely be attending. I guess I could just go around looking for corvettes in a parking lot . You think they will let a Vert run without a roll bar? If anyone has anymore info on the locality of this thing in Marina, please pass it on. If anything, I am looking for the sounds of new exhaust and this will be my chance to listen to them. Hope they use little cones . THanks for the replies.

There's no entry fee to watch. Entering costs about $20.00 or less. My first autocross (they were called "slaloms" then) was in 1961. I set third fastest time in a '56 Vet. It's a very addictive sport. It takes about a year to plateau your driving skills, then you can start messing with your car. Don't worry about your finishing position. It will be way down in class. Also, don't modify your car in any way. Stay in the stock classes, you'll have more fun that way. Make sure you've got 32-35 lbs of air in your tires, and GO FOR IT ! Almost everyone will be glad to help you. Get a ride with someone to learn the course. And if you enter, always walk the course !

Wow ! Are we up to $35.00. It used to be $3.00, and trophies every event. Of course this was when the earth was cooling.

Corpsvette,

Go to the autocross and enjoy your car in a safe, offroad location. And, seriously, you probably shouldn't be driving on the streets anyway if you don't know what "PED X-ING" is.

Aaahhh, found a flyer on another website and will be there with my on. I think a buddy up the street is lending me his helmet. Yep, wouldn't be there for the competition, just for the thrill. I am stock except hurst, Z06 lid and exhaust. I tracked for the first time in December and I am still wearing a grin even if I was the slowest car out there. IT was fun. Wished there was a track closer to me. Anyway, I will report back and let you know what fun I had. Hope the weather holds. Thanks again. Looking forward to tomorrow.

You will learn more about your car in that parking lot than years of street driving. It is a blast. Be sure to ride with someone in a similiar car. You will be surprised at how much more aggressive you need to be.

The helmet must have a certain Snell rating so check before you spend your money. My C5 balanced out with 42 lbs in the fronts and 24 lbs in the back. We did not expect it but that is what it took. (The pressure sensors hated it) Bring some school chalk and mark your tires about 1" below and onto the tread. This will tell you whether your tire pressure is correct.

Bring plenty of water to drink, plan to be there early and you will probably stay late. Have fun and remember, MS did not earn world championship status at his first event. (So don't get frustrated)

Good wax should get the cone marks off of your finish.

Too bad Marina is so far away, I'd like to go. If you're up for a drive, we have auto-x's at Qualcomm stadium a few times a year down here in San Diego. Check www.sdsolo.com for more info.

Now that's funny. My family is ready to have me committed for laughing out loud for no apparent reason...

Well, went out on a hunch of where it would be held and wouldn't you know it, I found a bunch of cones and Corvettes. The club members were super social and I am signed up to race first thing tomorrow. My buddy gave me his snell rated helmet so I am ready to go. Will post how it goes tomorrow and yes, it is now $35. Talk more later.

Default Too much fun.

Well, you guys and gals were right. What a blast. I got there late today but they saved me a spot. Before I paid, I took a ride with a new friend that really knew how to drive and I was WOWed just from being a passenger. Turned over my funds and off I went. My first run I lost control but never hit any cones and ran a 59. Each run after that got better and better until I hit 54.6 and had so much fun that I paid another 5 bucks for 2 mores runs. I have a perma that will last a very long time and best of all, I won 1st place in my class. My first car trophy. I am gonna need some rehab because that was addicting. Thanks for all the support and even a bigger thanks to the Santa Clara Club member for taking me under their wings and allowing me to have so much fun. Awesome group of people. The corvette is an awesome machine and I felt it today. I WANT MORE!

Glad you made the trip and really glad you enjoyed it. I think that most people find when they have a chance to competitive drive that the car has more in store than the driver does. Congrats on the trophy
