Default Magnetic Red differences?

Hey guys, whats up? I am new to this site, and I must say, it has some amazing info on it! I have an 01 Mag red vert, all original and mint with only 8k on it. I have seen some people call it Magnetic red 2. What is the difference between the original mag red, and mag red 2? Thanx guys!

Color Code 86U Magnetic Red II Metallic is what it is called according to this web site......

http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/.../2001prod.html

In 1997 and 1998 - there was a color called Light Carmine Red Metallic - 53U.

As far as I can tell there wasn't a Mag Red I. The color was available from 1999 through 2002 and then again in 2004. It was replaced by Anniversary Red - color code 94U as a part of the 50th Anniversary package, and brought back for the final model year of the C5.

It was carried over to the C6 for 2005, but has been discontinued for 2006.

Not much!

I thought I had a Mag Red 2 for a long time since my year is always advertized this way.

I have a very early 2000 model year. Last year during the American LeMans series at Road America I parked next to a 2001/2002 Mag Red 2 vert almost exactly like mine(had electrochomatic mirrors so I could tell). My wife and I sat in-betwwen the cars for awhile watching the race.

Later we backed up the hill to get a different view. Looking down I noticed that something seemed slightly different about the color. Mine seemed a quarter shade darker. Almost no difference, just something slightly strange. I patted myself on the back for the great Zanio job from the weekend before.

A few weeks later I checked my paint code in the glove box. I was shocked to find that my car was a rare 2000 with Mag Red. It made sense then.

I do not think there is any way that one could tell the difference without the cars side by side. I have heard that the Mag Reds have a slightly more brown hue where the Duece has a more red/pink hue.

FWIW

NOt sure of the years BUT I beleive Magnetic Red I was on the 2000 and the Magnetic Red II started with 2001. The Mag Red I has about 20 different varations and that is pretty much the resaon for the new Mag Red II in 2001.

I remember talking to a Mag Red I owner at a car show a year or so ago about it and it was a problem color to say the least!

Magnetic Red II is very very nice.... Great Color

Mag Red I has a little more Bronze tint to it, not as pretty and bright as the Mag Red II

2000 (9/99) with Mag Red II (86U) here. Corvette action center shows 99 as the first year for Magnetic Red II.

Glenn's description is correct. I accidently ordered a radiator tank
cover and windshield washer tank cover in MR1 and it is a brighter color.
I liked it better than the MR2 engine covers I had, so I traded them out
for MR1. Don't know why, but they seem to match the car better!

2004 MagRed II - never seen earlier color so I don't know how it compares.

IMO - best color ever to grace a C5.

By the way, the 3 cars pictured above in this post (Vetteran, DeeGee & whiterg) are really awesome! I love that color and your cars look spectacular.

That color was my 1st choice when I was planning on buying my C5 back in 2001, THEN 3 months before I bought mine one of my best friends buys a Mag Red II 02 coupe, so I decided to get a different color than him. EB for me.

Anyway, your cars look great above in this post.

I have a 99 Magnetic Red I and I can say that I can tell the difference between my car and a Mag Red II. The easiest way I can tell is by looking at the back of the car and comparing the shade of the paint to the brakelights (when off) on a sunny day. The shade of the MG1 paint almost perfectly matches the shade of unlit brakelights. The shade of MG2 paint is clearly darker than the shade of unlit brakelights. Call me crazy... but it looks clearly different to me.

BTW, when I first bought the car, I went back to the dealer to get some touchup paint and I gave the guy my vin # and he said that they didn't have any and needed to order it. Ok I wait- I return- I purchase without looking closely at the can assuming that they got it right- go home only to find that I bought a can of TORCH RED Anyway- the can is sitting in my garage if anyone wants a free can of Torch red touchup paint in south jersey area, I would be happy to meet or send it to you...

Glenn...You're right about the action center and its accuracy.

And my 2001 was Torch as first choice after considering the MRII.
The Torch just seened to look better in the shade.

But after I saw the EB (my all-time favorite), I wish I had waited.

As it turns out, I re-fell in love with the MR II with my '04. As you can see...George

Thanks for the clarification! From shopping for touch up paint, I knew they doubled up on the RPO. Have to check the build sticker again to see what I actually have!

I almost bought a 99 Mag Red Vert but kept looking at it and looking at it and it seemed to throw off an orange shade in bright sunlight. Later saw a 99 and a 00 parked together and could certainly tell the difference in the paint colors. I ended up buying an 00 Mag Red II & love that color. Oak interior, of course.

Out of the corvette black book.... Only in 2004 Magnetic Red 2 was a new reformulated version of the Magnetic Red avaible from 1999-2002

The 2004 Magnetic Red 2 only in 2004 is Super Rare.
