Default Valve spring kit of choice for a ATI supercharger.

I'll be ordering the ATI from Andy in the next few weeks. I'm starting my parts list to complete this project by April. The guys at FLP recommended strong springs to prevent valve float. Alright now, which ones do I need? single, dual, bee hive, Max lift, max diameter, titanium retainers, moly lifter rods, Comp Cams, Crane...?
There is a lot to choose from and probably parts that for 470-500hp range that would be over-kill. I'm guess that springs with at least 130lbs at 1.8 are what I need. But again I am guessing. Please give me some advice so I can get started on this part of the package.

I have a REV 1116 Dual spring kit for sale. It includes the springs, Ti retainers & hardened steel seats. You will need to buy new stock seals (under $20). I will also include two extra springs. I am asking $200 for the set.

My valves floated, used Z06 springs, seems to fixed the problem, they are pretty cheap too.

My stock Z06 valve springs worked fine. Ive since replaced the springs with comp cams 918 because i changed cams. But the Z06 springs will do just fine and are substantially stronger than the LS1 springs.

i've always felt that stock internals were fine for applications < 500 rwhp.

Could someone explain how a supercharger affects the need for stroger valve springs? I mean, it is the same cam and lift, so how does the small increase ( pounds wise) in air volume an pressure make the valves float?

:iagree: :iagree:

The 2 reasons to go to a stiffer spring would be either a increased lift in the cam or if you want to spin the engine higher then 6,200 rpm. I have done quite a few S/C cars with stock cams and have never had the valves float under 6300 rpm or so.

Well I just learned something from FLP today. The stock C5 with the ATI will do fine with stock valve springs. The springs would need to be stronger if I was to Turbocharge the car because of the exhaust back pressure. But for the SC, the valves are fine as they are. The other reason to go stronger would be to prepare for future enhancements. So for now, I'm going to stay stock and see how it dynos.

:iagree: But just put a turbo into the mix and you need better that Z06 springs for sure

It appears that the stock valves are marginal at best and not reiable on FI engines. Hmmmm!
I may be doing it after all.

I have had no problems as yet, but I intend to upgrade eventually. I'll probably do it with a head/cam package. Going to put an intake on in the next few weeks, and we'll see how they react to that.

How do you know if you have valve float?

The dyno shows power loss at high RPMs.

Ran my ATI @ 7lbs of boost for 1 year with stock springs and never floated the valves.
Changed to yellow ZO6 springs when I added the SLP 1.85 rocker's. :yesnod: I really have a hard time beliveing you need any other springs then stock with only 7lbs of boost.
Increased spring pressure only increases the parasitic loss of the engine. :yesnod:

From what I was told, it has alot to do with back pressure. 2 time the pounds in is normal for a turbo..ie. 7lb's in 14lb's back pressure. I don't think a SC would have this issue. :yesnod:

Some how I must have missed something boost is boost no matter how you achive it.........
Back pressure is in the exhaust system and would aid in closing the valves so I guess we should change to lighter springs on the exhaust only! :D
While true on the intake side the boost can at some levels detract from the closed seat pressure, lbs of boost times the area of the valve subtracted from the seat pressure will tell you just how much. :)
On a 2" dia. intake valve this would be about 22lbs subtracted from the closed seat pressure.
Unless you have a set of springs that are really tired or on the low side of pressure, they can only hold spring rates to + - 10% in production I doubt you will have any problems.
