Is This Rational?
Cliff Notes version: I have an immaculate, low mileage '98 coupe with a high dollar, best parts Procharged 427. I've already spent at least twice as much money in mods as I could sell the thing for, and now I'm wanting C6 Z06 brakes, TR 6060, etc. What about this plan?
Buy an unmodded C6 Z06 (I love the look), install my 900+ RWHP engine in it, install the stock LS7 in my '98 and sell the car. I'd have the good Z06 parts plus the electronic driving nannies that I could not retrofit to the '98. Admittedly, I'd have to dump around $25k into the transaction, but what the hell? Putting more money into my C5 would be like pouring it down a rat hole.
Fire away!

I really do not want a C7. Right now, I view them as poser cars. Besides, I love my current engine but would like it in a more macho looking vehicle. The stability control in the C6 Z is also something I want. I've done a couple of Road Atlanta events in the C5, and with the TC off, every turn is an invitation to do 360s.

As much as I love C5, you make a good case (for you) to wind up with the C6, with your SC engine. That should be a monster set up, for you.
Wide body C6 look great.
No way would I ever let myself wind up with one of those ticking time bomb, blowing up, valve throwing, LS7 engines.
Good luck whatever you decide.

Interesting question, I have a 98 as well, and also have an 08 base model. The 08 has a built H/C Motor making over 500 RWHP. A buddy of mine just went off track, totaled the car, but the motor with freshly upgraded for safety heads, would go nicely into my C6...
Take a few days and look hard at all your options, and DON'T rule out that Base model C7. There was a guy with one at the roadcourse this past weekend, and granted he was a GREAT driver, but that car HAULED AZZ!

Pull your engine from the C5.
Install a LS1 in its place for minimal cost.
Buy Your C6Z and pull LS7
Used LS7 will fetch more money on its own than it will in if you put it in the C5. Pending milage you can easily get 7K for a used, complete with dry sump LS7.
Install the Built engine in the C6Z and be done with it.
