Who's running oil coolers? Pros & Cons..
I have a oil cooler that I have been waiting to install for months my cars on jack stands now just put the trans back in I thought it would be a good time to do the oil cooler.

I installed an Earls 19 row cooler. It knocked 20-25* off of my oil temps on average in all conditions. Oil temps are much closer to coolant temps now. I also gained about 7-8 psi more oil pressure at hot idle.
I really don't see any downside to an oil cooler other then the cost/labor...
Note that it did not help with my coolant temps any though...

Thanks AJ I was hoping you would step in I'm doing the same cooler. I was worried about a pressure drop! My car now gets down to 18psi in 100*+ In traffic seems to do it when my oil temp gets hotter than my coolant! from what your saying here is it helped with that Right?
I Just don't want my pressure to get any lower on a hot idle

I have read that oil needs to get to 178* + to burn off water? How low does your get on a cooler day?
My Coolant temps are good I think its the full size Dewitts rad. and elect. Meziere water pump

I had pretty freakin high oil temps with my motor before the oil cooler. Just cruising on the hwy at 2100 rpms on a 95* day I'd see 230-245* oil temps.. Average was around 225*... My hot oil pressure during the summer would go down to 18-19 psi at 800rpms and 230* oil temp. (10w30 synthetic). Since the cooler, the lowest I have seen is 25 psi since the oil temp is usually no higher then 215*.. I did go to 5w40 oil so that helps as well but.... Most of the time now, it idles hot around 29-30 psi.. Oil temp stays between 200-215* on average. The highest I have seen it get to was 226* and that was during some highway bombs..
I didnt try the cooler with the 10w30 oil so not apples to apples but.... I do like having the cooler. A little more oil capacity as well. I used the lingenfelter adapter block and all -10 hoses.. I doubt you'll see less oil pressure once the whole system is completely full.
As for the cold winter... Hell man this is Texas.. What winter?... If I can get the oil up to 170* or so, I'm happy.

We like to use the stock C6Z cooler since it has a built in temp controlled check valve. We also have easy to install brackets that place it right behind the radiator.

That C6Z cooler is pretty trick.
I installed an oil cooler this summer and it worked wonders. My cruise/idle oil temp in the 95+ heat was easily 220-240. With the oil cooler the temps stay below 200 in most cases.
When deciding on the adapter I picked up the Improved Racings Low-Profile with Thermostat. This will ensure the oil gets to temp (180 degrees) even if it is cold out. Didn't want to have to cover up the cooler or disconnect lines for the winter.

I like this set up Doug, could you PM me a price on this setup when you have time please, that check valve is awesome as I drive my car in 95 - 60 degree days and was worried that the oil would not reach proper temps on cooler days!

I added a 13-row cooler from LPE this summer. On a 90+ degree day, I still got 230 oil temp on the hwy, but was worse without it. In cooler temps (50's) the oil has no trouble heating up.

Thank you men sounds like more pros than cons here, I really like the ECS way too bad I already got this lingenfelter adapter block and 15' of -10 line and a 19 row cooler like AJ said we live in Texas what winter also I don't drive much in cold weather bad for traction

I have an older style Derale on my car, cruising on sub 70* days its usually aroun 180, and on days of 90+ it avg's around 190.
I am curious how fast everyone's cars recover after a couple pulls? I try very hard not to beat on the car when its over 205*, It can get there after only a couple pulls sometimes or a full pass on the track. After slowing back to cruising speeds how fast does the cooler bring back the temperatures to normal operating range? Curious if I need to update my cooler to a new style.

Where are you guys tapping into the the supply and return? My oil temp sensor hadn't been working until recently, and ignorance was bliss. I should address this though. Based on my oil psi dropping I am sure temps are up there.
