Do I need Long Tube headers for F/I Set-up??
In preparation for my SC install I just completed a crap load of work which included new rear main seal, new clutch (monster stage 1 twin) and everything associated with that. Repaired leaking tail shaft on trans, new hinson engine and diff/tranny mounts. I also installed LG longtube headers. I looks like I need to go back into the clutch now ( that is another thread in itself) and I cannot even pull the inspection plate with the headers on.
So, do I really need the long tube to get the benefit out of the F/I set up. I only want make around 600 RWHP and do not want to continue to deal with the issues the long tube are causing such as the space requirements and the heat shielding needed.
Is there a shorty that will provide adequate flow, and let me use a stock or close to stock exhaust configuration?
I would really appreciate some experienced advice.
Thanks

yes! when alot of air is coming in it needs alot of air to leave. without the headers you are choking it so do you need them to be FI? no but to get the benifits... YES!

A tuner had told me there would be minimal difference between the long tube and the shorties. So, that is why I was asking. I was hoping I could get by with the shorties without sacrificing to much.
Thanks for the feed back guys.

If all you want to do is make 600, then no. just finished up an install that made 580 and a junk tune I just thrown in there to get the car going.. It had stock manifolds and some baby cam on 243's.. with meth on like 7 psi.
One of my OG blower setups I made 570 with just a blower and push rods.. haha no meth on 10 psi..
You don't need them if you want such small goals.

he probably said there wouldn't be much difference between stock manifolds & shorties. the stockers on LS engines flow pretty good (unlike the old SBC pieces). LTs will make your goal easier to reach because the blower won't have to work as hard to move air through the engine.

Do you need them ? Likely not.
Should you use them? Likely so. More air flow capacity requires less boost to make same power and less strain on your engine I would think.
You should be able to un bolt your headers and swing them out of the way for access. That is what I did with my bellanger LT headers when I did my clutch etc.
They are still there in pic just un bolted and moved out of way.

I appreciate the info. I figured the consensus would be to stay with the LT's. I was hoping to simplify the process of just checking the clutch in the future, but understand the trade off.
Thanks for the useful info.
