Default why not? supercharger wastegate

So there I was the other night staring at the ceiling in bed, and this crazy idea came to my head to use a wastegate and a boost controller on a cenrtifugal setup, then bam, today I see this link. So my question is, why is nobody doing it? I would love to be able to go from 5 to 15 psi with no belt changes.

Wouldn't the tune somehow have to accomodate for the various boost levels? If this is possible, I want it!

im thinking the only issue would be that intake temps....

if you were to go wot and spin the the blower to, lets say 20psi, and bleed off 10psi for the wanted 10psi charge, wouldnt the inlet temps be higher than if the blower were spinning to the wanted 10psi level? obviously the characteristics of the blower would change as you would need to be efficient at higher rpms(blower rpms, not motor) and then have to deal with the negative aspects of having a bigger blower than what you *really* need.

good forbid the spring get stuck and the motor get fed double the intake charge....kaboom!

It would work, it's just not very efficient.
The power used to drive the blower would be the same at low boost as it would at high boost, and the heat produced by the blower would be the same too.
More efficient would be a variable blower inlet restriction, or just changing restrictor plates, like some here do already.

Subscribing to read that post later!

I would go with more B@@ST too if I could have a controler

Thanks,Matt

If you will re-read the article, it states that when the wg was open, the temps were actually lower than normal at that psi. And on the efficiency note, the blower would be in its efficiency range all of the time, and would just not be bleeding off the boost at high boost settings, with a more linear torque curve.

Changing the restrictor plates, is a good way to do it, but I think this may be a better way. IMHO

I read that article a while back. Makes me want to try it, but I don't have the budget to try something like that and it be a waste. Any vette guys give it a try yet?

I am sure that one of the nuts here is willing to try it out, I would do it, but I am in afghanistan till this fall, and don't even have the blower yet, only 3 payments left to andy.

Just really need A&A or ECS to make a prototype charge tube with wastegate.

I've been looking at this option or a single turbo. I don't really want to have to run around in high HP mode all of the time. Looking for some type of compromise.

When I get to this stage of my car build, hopefully somebody will have something avaialble.

It's not efficient.Already tried it.

Your forgetting the important feature of the supercharger, you can control boost level with your foot.

Yes and No. It's more RPM related, so the more gas you give the more boost you get.

If you want the best of both worlds you would want the wastegate.

what is not efficient? Please elaborate, how was the car setup? When running the smaller pulley, to make more boost you would achieve that 7 or whatever psi that you desire much faster than on a conventional setup, thus giving you more power under the curve.

Wastegates on superchargers is a pretty old concept, and easy to implement. I'm sure lots of experiments were done on this already.

what I am curious of though, is why is it never done? I haven't found a downside to it yet. I do know that it is an old concept, because I forget where, but I saw the original patent for the first one in a magazine somewhere, and it said turbo/supercharger regulator, or something to that effect.

Maybe because a restrictor plate is simpler, Occam's Razor.

Pop off valves were used on the manifolds, not wastegates.

A restrictor plate would be easier initially, but once this was finished, You could up the boost from the drivers seat, with absolutely no removing of anything, or stopping and pulling out your screwdriver. I think that if no one has any better info on this I will try it this fall/winter when I get back to the US and install my blower and things.

I had been waiting to post up until I was completely finished and had my high rpm miss figured out. I did this a few months back. Running a 2bar SD tune. Added a 5psi waste gate to the intake charge tube and a Greedy Profec B boost controller for waste gate control..Works like a charm. Low boost is set at 13-14psi, high boost is set to max, whatever the blower pulley is, 18-20psi. With a push of a button you can go from 14psi to 18psi. No pulley changes or ristrictor plates needed... Low boost made 640rwhp, high boost was 720rwhp at 5700rpm..Haven't dynoed over 5700rpm yet..Still working on that problem..

Couple of pics..
