I had over 40 9-second runs and over 5000 hard street miles last year on my RPM ( Rodney ) 4L60E , the trans was shifting like brand new when I took it out to do the RPM 4L80E conversion ! RPM builds the best in the business , my Rossler never made it past 10 runs back in the day before RPM came along

That would be for me vs the turbo400.
Why would you change it out for the 4l80?

At think at the level you are at Roy it probably wouldn't hurt to have a spare tranny/converter incase of breakage. This would save you alot downtime when and if it fails.

Because it was still on the edge at the 9.3-9.5 zone , and I want to put more power to the ground , the opportunity for the 4L80 came up and I took it , at the end of last year I made 10 mid 9-second runs in one day , driving to and from the track , and cruising around all night , sometimes I wish I left the RPM 4L60 in .

Former Vendor
Transmission life expectance is to dependant on other parts. I have guys that have destroyed level V's with around 400RWHP. Here are some things that cause trans failures.
Installation error's such as:
Low fluid level
contaminated coolers
improper tuning
pump breakage (converter no all the way back)
misadjusted shifter linkage
blocked/pinched cooler lines
etc....
Driving errors:
hot lapping
repeated 4-2 downshifts
over temp
neutral drops (Hey I have seen it)
wheel hop
Parts failure:
Converter failure
Converter clutch failure
Forward sprag failure
Output shaft failure
Pump rotor failure
Input drum failure
I could go on and on but the key is how you handle the failure and how fast you can get the car back on the road or track.
