Below is C5 marketplace data from ebay for the month of september. The data has 4 columns. The first Column is the year of the Corvette, the second column is the Style i.e Coupe, Convertible, Z06, Pace Car, The third column are the number of miles on the cars and the forth column is the average price for all the sales that have occured.

Some additonal key pieces of information regarding the data below.
- The data below is summary data made up of around 1000 different C5 that have occurred in September
- Only auctions that had bids are in this data. I eliminated all auctions that had 0 bids
- I eliminated all the detail items that were skewing the results (i.e. a Z06 for $10K etc.)
- Most of the cars in this data did not meet the reserve so the results are really an indication of what people are willing to pay
- Sorry about the spacing of the columns. I could not get them to lineup like I wanted

Interesting idea but IMHO it gives an incorrect picture of the market that is MUCH below what cars are actually selling for.

I think a better tool would be to show figures for cars that actually sold. We could then see what sellers are willing to accept for their cars. Just knowing that people are willing to offer low amounts in hopes of stealing a car doesn't really tell us much.

I've bid on a half dozen cars over the last few months and while all were above the numbers you show - none of the sellers were willing to let the cars go for that price.

I was thinking the same thing but waiting for someone else to say it. From the perspective of someone selling on this forum, I've had offers or bids you can say of $31K to $32K for my Z06. That doesn't mean that it's worth that in the market. As of now, I'm firm at $36K and I think that's extremely fair for what I have to offer. So, try getting a steal for a Corvette and you'll end up short most of the times unless there are other factors involved (seller going through divorce, just tired of holding onto it and have tried other avenues, etc.).

In the end, I agree that if you have a list of what the buyers and sellers actually agree on then that paints a more complete picture. Also, must weed out what are false reserve mets, deadbeat bidders, etc. Also, must be very careful on who is actually selling the Corvette and the pedigree behind the vehicle. Just my $0.02.

This isn't the case. The seller doesn't make the market, the buyer does. Corvette owners are notorious for thinking their car is worth more than it really is. Washing and waxing it doesn't make it worth 50% more than what every publication says. I don't care what a seller is willing to accept, if he wants to sell the car, the seller doesn't have a choice. Cars get listed, re-listed, and then re-listed numerous times becuase the owner won't accept market on the car. Lowballing is just part of the game. These prices are a tad low, but not way off. Give them a $1K here and there depending on condition, and you are in the ballpark.


I hope you like your car, its going to be yours for a while.

How long will you continue to pay insurance, upkeep and additional depreciation before it hits people that holding a car at a high price isn't selling, its fishing ?

Idiot fishing works sometimes, but if you really want to sell it in a reasonable time frame, you can't ignore the market. People offering to buy a car are a WHOLE lot more accurate than one person who THINKS its worth more.

Arguing about it won't make your cars sell faster.

What's up with the attitude? You really think I'm what you term "idiot fishing" by offering an '03 Z06 with 2,500 miles for $36K? Well, since I've put it up for sale last Friday -- for a fair price -- I've received about 12 calls and working with a few of them who want to take a look at it. These people are calling from Canada, Boston, New York, etc. so it takes a while to work out the travel, etc. since I wouldn't expect anyone to buy it sight unseen.

So, keep those "idiot fishing" comments for the others who are selling their '01 or '02 cars with HIGH MILES e.g. 20K, 30K for $35,000+. Talk to the people that have called me on my car and I would bet you wouldn't call them idiots.

But I respect what you're saying. I'm not ignoring the "data" but the data has to be taken with a grain of salt as you talk with the owners and really get an idea of the car they're selling.

Look if someone wants to buy a 2003 for about the same as a new 2004, all the more power to you. You will sell it then.

This isn't directed at you, just a comment on the market. I have bought and sold Corvettes and the actions remain the same; the value of the car isn't determined by the owner, but the buyer.

Not saying I don't believe you but want to see what is out there right now available. I'll do the buyers out there a favor and call up these folks that you mention and report back my findings. Just want to compare apples to apples.

I agree with GTrain, most dealers still have a couple new C5s for 10-12k off MSRP. I almost jumped on a new commerative edition with a 6 speed and polished rims for $39,000. A great deal but it's a lot more then the wife and I wanted to spend . I think it's still available and King Chevrolet in TYLER, TX. I talked with Brad Hall (800) 458-5464. Obviously the new stock is getting limited so getting the options you want is a problem.

BTW, vette100, Great work. For those up us still looking for a used C5 the list is very helpful.

Just wanted to provide you and others with an update.

I just got off the phone with Brad Hall. He says that one you're talking about 2003 LeMans Blue was coupe MN6 that was SOLD last Saturday. He had 6 '04's but all of them are sold except for the one. That one is one "Mrs. King" is driving.

Here's the comparison:

His:
'04 MN6 Coupe - $39,000 + State Taxes.

vs. Mine:
'03 Z06 w/ Z06 Chrome Rims & 2,500 miles $36,000 + Private Party Taxes.

His is gone, mine is still available.

The 0% for 72 must have cleared them out. In that case, your right, there probably very few new ones left in the country. I wonder with the new '04s gone will the used prices of newer low miles C5s go back up some?

JSIK, Is there a difference in taxes if you buy private party? I always thought the rate was the same. For private party, you just had to pay the taxes when you get plates.
