EB02 thanks for the IM. What a story. You got lucky in the end but it could have turned out much worse.

From the many posts I'd say the safest is Mainiac's plan. Go to the car pay for it and drive it home.

Others have said two checks sent from a distance...ok car but the seller now has a paid for car and has to be honest enough to ship it.

My plan is for the seller to bring the car to me and go to a local office of the lien holder if there is one. With no local payoff I'd be paying the seller the amount of the payoff and a check for his equity and having the car and maybe the title with a lienholder listed...in hopes that when the seller gets home he will actually pay off the loan and send me the release and or the title.

I am careful. So I think I'll wait until I find a car locally or with no lienholder...hello supporting dealers. :D

I sold my 95 Vert in November of 2000, for 25,500 to a guy in Memphis. I had the car, and he overnited me a cashiers check. I had car, Title and check. Couldnt screw the guy. I overnited him Title the same day I got check, and shipped the car later that week. :)

...Couldnt screw the guy....
That is exactly my point, Repo. YOU couldn't screw the guy and from your many posts and our IM's I know that to be true. I'd have NO problem doing business with you...it's the neferious strangers out there (like EB02's experience) with whom I am concerned.

If thats it,,,you should bid up to 39K,,for that price a road trip would be in order. :)

Rochester is like 4 to 4/12 hours from albany,,so you could figure from there, and yes there is a GMAC office in Rochester.

My preferred way to handle this is to handle the transaction AT the financial company that has the lien.
Drag the current owner with you to the office and start signing forms. ;)
