don't know about that. Other then the tires you could say that about any used car. C5s in the big picture are actually pretty reliable cars. 20 years ago a college student would have given his eye teeth for a car as reliable as a c5 that still got over 25 mpg.

If you can't find a reasonable car in your budget then you aren't looking very hard. There's no excuse when there are so many resources available such as craigslist and autotrader.
Take a look at the Toledo Craigslist. '98 C5 w/30K mi. for $14K.

At your price point you will most certainly get a car that needs 3-5k because at that price point you are not getting a maintenace/fix free car.

it isn't uncommon to find a good car for 12-14k, you just have to have your finds ready and check sites daily and jump on one when you see it. You shouldn't pay much attention aside from a little laugh to the people listing their 97-01's for near the same price as c6's who bump their threads up for months wondering why they only get "low ball" offers

A year ago I passed on a 99 Z51 manual car with 91k, for $13k.

He ended up selling it for $11k a few months later.

They are definitely out there!

Very true. The car, while cosmetically beautiful, needs an ECBM module which GM doesn't make anymore for this model year. If you can find one, they go for anywhere from$1500 to $3000.

Having owned and sold 10+ C5Zs over the years. Most of the sellers are unrealistic about the values of their cars here.

Turing down over book value for their cars, and they sit.

A dealer would low ball them by 8k or more below that.

A C5 Z with 60k to 100k is not going to sell for 25k.

There are too many other options at that price point of newer nicer cars.

Default "Gold"

I probably hit both ends of the spectrum having bought two c5zs this year. The first is an '02 with 22k miles for $23k on EBAY (daily driver) and the second is an '01 with 148k miles for $11.5k right here on the forum (autocross only). Neither car was a"screaming" deal but I think I gave a fair price for both. Fun factor is over the top as long as you enjoy driving AND working on your car as much as I do. And I do run them hard. More money= toy and less money= project. I agree with what others have said- this is the "best bang for the buck" car I have ever owned. The reality is that these cars will only go so low in value no matter what shape they are in. It took me most of a year to find my "gold". Good luck with your search!

While I understand the OP really wants a C5 and is frustrated to not be able to find something in his price range... you get what you pay for.

Certainly there are some cars that are overpriced. That's with any sports/hi-perf car.

But there are lots of cars that have been pampered and meticulously cared for, and an astute buyer will just pony up and pay a fair price for one of these examples... unless you're buying a race car or something you plan to work on consistently.

Buy what you can afford, and don't look back. If you can't afford it, just save a little more. You'll find your car!

As a paying-my-way through school college student, my budget is limited. But as a car guy, there are toys I want to have and love.

Starting my search for a C5 at corvette world of Dallas proved to be out of my league. 30,000 mile cars for $26,000.
Needless to say, it's not what I'm looking for.

But even looking one here, I see people posting their 80-100k mile cars for upwards of $20,000. So, what gives? How can your car be a better example of the breed? I hate to offend anybody, but I feel that nobody is saying anything because it's simply a group of people with money to blow, and us young guns stand to the side and out of the way.

I guess that's all I have to say.
I'd like to find a nice example of a C5 to purchase. I'm looking in the $12-$14k range AT THE TOP. And up to 100k miles. If you have anything or spot anything, let me know. I'd love to find my little piece of corvette heaven.

All the best,
R
I bolded and underlined your problem. You looked at the wrong Corvette dealer here. You need to look at Corvette Warehouse in Dallas for the better deal.

It can be repaired for just a few bucks and some time. I recently posted a link to the do-it-yourself repair of a ECBM. Check it out.

Myself knowing that if i even considered selling my 03 z06 the price tag would be heafty. Why? Because what the hell else do you buy? So save your money young buck and be patient and wait for the right z06 to come your way. And hold out for the z06 trust me. It will be a car you will want to keep forvever
This is an absolutely dead on analysis that I think many people are missing. Keep in mind this is the lightest Z06 combined with the FRC body. Add to it that a C5Z has won the Optima Ultimate Street car competition 2 years running. As far as HDPE is concerned I think it's absolutely the most balanced, most reliable Z there is.

Many things are bolstering, or at least maintaining the C5 Z06's value. If you look at the factory marketing numbers even...by todays standards it's still valid...big time. Not to mention, the cost of ownership is dare I say cheap, versus ANYTHING that can touch it on a road course.

Dead on. I swore I was getting a C7...then a C7Z...yet I find myself still owning my C5Z. I am starting to see a C7 Z51 as possibly the car to own that matches this C5Z in terms of cost/benefit/potential...but that's not clear to me yet. I currently know of a number of people preparing for C5Z purchases that are YOUNG guys...people are recognizing this car and that's only going to prop values. Get'em while you can in my opinion.

The point I am hoping to make is that in order to be where I am today, I own a '59 and a '66, is that I had to sacrifice and focus then I could come back and play. This is a suggestion (take it or leave it), take time to focus on school/training so that you can earn that really great job that will ultimately allow you to buy one of these fun cars (and never go into debt just to buy a toy).

Anyone who is buying a C5 on a budget should probably not be shopping here. Most sellers here are pricing the cars way too high, but that's because they bought them here, and overpaid. You are also dealing with C5 fanatics, so that's to be expected. I've owned 5 C5'S...1 FRC and 4 Zo6's. In my opinion, the wisest choice to get the best value would be a FRC with low mileage. With a few mods, they can be as quick or quicker and handle just as well. The pewter one that someone posted with 41k would be my choice, but it's still a little pricey. I would got to $15k, because it will need some upgrading...probably a clutch, brakes etc. Just my opinion.
