Someone wants to trade my C5 for a 1971 ss monte carlo
I am not sure if this is posted in the proper place? I have someone who wants to trade a 1971 ss monte carlo for my 01 vert. The car is documented as a true ss. What would you all do? The ss has 91,000 miles and is really nice. However my 01 vert is perfect with 15k miles. What would you do. Oh I do like the ss monte very much. Fair deal or not such a good deal? Sixty4.

DON'T DO IT!!! I have owned many various muscle cars throughout the years. They are nice for what they are.If it's one you've wanted since a teenager or a kid then do what you wish.......IMHO I would ask him for $10k and his 71 SS for your C5 vert.

The Monte SS are not in high demand from what I have seen over the years,, Maybe if it were a Chevelle SS, GTO, Etc.. But the reality is the Monte is worth far less than you Vert imo....
Of course I just sold my 67 Camaro RS this morning to a guy up in Canada..

I bought a 1971 Monte Carlo SS new and it was a great car until my son totaled it in the mid 80's. But there is no way I would trade my 2000 coupe for another one! The turbo 400 did not have an overdrive and it got lousy gas mileage. It was fast for its day and would chirp the tires coming out of first at 55 mph. Handling (even with the rear sway bar) was poor and the brakes were not very good.
But if that is what you want, go for it!!!

Your crazy if you do. No offense but those old muscle cars suck, they are slow, unreliable and outdated. I might pick one up to keep on the side, but would never trade a low mileage 01 vert C5 for one. You'd have to be crazy.

Safety Car
Years ago I drove my Aunt's '71 Monte: Sloppy steering, weak brakes, wallowy handling... made all the more scary by a V8 (454?) that built speed faster than the car could handle.
If you like to drive, don't trade. If you like to park at car shows and talk old cars and maybe do some low-speed cruising and relive the good ol' days, well, maybe. At least the Monte's electrics are easy to fix. And no smog cert here in CA.

you would have to be crazy check online and ebay to see what those cars are worth, and verify if it is an original car with the original engine if its not its not worth too much, also keep in mind if the person collects cars or restorse them an engine could easily be restamped with all correct vin #'s BBBEEEE CAREful Idont think that car is worth more than 20k maybe 25 if its a straight car not a bondo mobile

Thanks all, The person actually would be willing to fork over cash, about 6000. The car is a true SS that has been in two major mags. It is probably one of the cleanest and the person is the original owner with stacks of reciepts from day one. Thats why it is so interesting to me. However with that being said I think I may hold out for more cash or let it go. I think I would miss the C5 to much. Sixty4.

If you really want the car... just buy it from him outright... SS montes in mint condition do not bring 25k (which is what your will bring in the fair market).....

Don't believe all cars go for the price the drunk wealthy bidders are paying at the auctions.

You can go to the Barrett-Jackson auction sight but there is no way a 71 Monte SS is going for the kind of money that your car is worth. If it is then it is a good body off restoration. If you do it and you want to maintain its value then park it and trailer from place to place.
Owning both old muscle cars and vettes the money for the average guy is not in an old muscle car.
You are either going to pay a fortune for original parts or fabrications.

THe Monte may be a better "investment," but it's a MISERABLE automobile. Heavy, rattling, and slow - it does absolutely nothing well. If you enjoy actually driving a car, at least get something you WANT to drive!
I don't care what anyone says, short of a nut-and-bolt frame-off $70K restoration, old cars suck.
