Need c4 Purchase advise ZR1 or 40th
I am looking at 2 c4's one 90 ZR1 red and a 93 40th convert. Both have about 40k miles for the same price. I know that investment is relative but which one would be a better purchase/investment? Thanks for your help

Neither - C4's are not a good investment, and won't be for a long time.
I would get the 40th. The LT1 can be modified to produce some pretty good numbers, without breaking the bank. It can also be worked on by just about anyone, and parts are readily available. Plus - I really like verts!!

ZR-1s can be worked on just as easily. They really aren't that bad. The ZR-1 shares 85% of the same components as any other Vette. The only thing that is different is the engine. Although parts aren't as readily available, the engine is built better and last a lot longer than the LT-1s. As far as modifying the LT for cheaper, yeah you have the Z on that one, but he is looking for investments, so I don't believe he will be modding any of them. My $.02 is the Z. I have driven an LT, owned a l98, and a Z, there is no comparison IMO.

No Question
ZR1 would have to be my answer if it's a C4 you want.
That will be my next purchase as a stable mate to my 160,000 mile L98 C4 !! Just because I like them !
Your Grand Kids will enjoy the results of your investment on any C4 !!
and thier kids on a C5 Z06 !!
I believe cars are for fun , the investment side is a possible long term bonus........maybe !

If you want to drive the car and enjoy it, the Z is the "only" choice.
Of course I am biased, but I have driven many C4's.....
Take a look @ www.zr1.net and look @ all the info about the car.
Good Luck!

I have to say, I have no ability to pick good investments. However to my mind the ZR-1 would seem to be more likely the long-term winner. It is a special model that is all about performance. The 40th Anniversary is a color and trim package. But then again, the same is true of GS's and look at some of the 'vert prices.
Autoweek recently picked 14 cars that they felt were the most significant from GM's first 100 years. There were three Corvettes in the pick, the 1953, the 1963, and the 1990 ZR-1.

Drive both cars... If the Z was taken care of, you will "want" the Z.

Depends on what you are wanting. As far as investment, the Zr1 is probably the better investment. However, neither are great investments. I personally like the verts as far as cruising but I'm sure the Zr1 with all the power is fun to drive. Having owned two c4 coupes before my vert, I found that removing a targa top is not the same as putting the top down. Drive both and get the one you like best.

If both are in the same condition, for the same cost, the ZR-1 will maintain more interest and thus offer more money on a future resale.

Melting Slicks
Don't listen to people about the ZR-1's are hard to work on. Sure some items are expensive and yes some areas are not for every mech. but the car is nothing to be affraid of. That LT1's Opti Spark is nothing to write home about. There are items discontinued for the LT1 cars that pose a problem as well. I can't stand the way a C4 Conv. feels. The COWL SHAKE 99.9% of the hundreds of C4 Conv's I've driven drives me crazy. The C4 Conv. lacks rigidity compared to the ZR-1.
At the end of the day the ZR-1 has an exotic engine and history. The 40th's are nice cars but its just paint and interior color, thats it. There are a lot of interior pieces discontinued from GM in Ruby and expensive if you can find them NOS. Yes they make some reproduciton stuff but its not that same.
Again drive both cars.
Good Luck

To answer your question without bias (yeah, right)...the ZR-1 is Corvette, only more so. Look at the numbers. Exclusivity usually equals worth in the collector car market. If you are solely concerned about "reduced depreciation" then the ZR-1 just makes sense.
Drive them both. Don't be scared of the ZR-1/LT5--we will help.
