Pricing - 1993 Polo Green Coupe
My dad is selling his '93 Polo Green coupe, and he's thinking of running it through the McDorman Corvette auction tomorrow, located here in Ohio.
He has a '93 Polo Green/Tan coupe, with 134,000 miles. The exterior is a 9/10 (only a few minor scratches, no paint chips or nicks), the interior is okay...(seat bolster has a tear in it on the driver's side, carpets need deep cleaned but have no major stains/no rips)
Everything works, except the power antenna (stuck up).
What's a fair reserve price to set on this car? Thanks much to anyone who can help.

The miles hurt it quite a bit, and polo green is hard to sell! If he wants the best deal he needs to be prepared for a long wait for the right buyer. If I were you I would be happy to get $8000, but if I was buying I would want to pay $6000...
I have no idea on the auction reserve, it just depends what the market there is normally like and then what it is on that day. If it costs a lot to put it in the auction I wouldn't waste your time/money because finding the right buyer there and then who is willing to pay a lot for a car with high miles is a longshot...

Price?
I hate to disagree with previous posters, but I believe Polo 'vettes sell very, very well. Polo/tan is a desireable color combo in my experience.
I do agree about the miles hurting, though. We all know the LT1/4 us nearly bulletproof, and with proper maintenance and care are good for 150 - 200k of good performance. The rest of the world thinks 100k is high mileage, however. When you consider the wear and tear on all the other mechanicals, interior, paint, glass, etc. it IS a lot of miles.
Local market determines the price - no doubt about it. With your description I'd hope for $8 - $10k on a really good day, but fear a $6k valuation at auction (maybe even less). Retail is the best way to get top dollar, but I don't appreciate the hassle either, so I understand the auction route decision. Good luck,

Just to add more data...
It's an automatic. Body color top...hasn't been off the car in the 9 years he's owned it.
Standard suspension. A pretty no-frills car, actually.
He's thinking he can put an $8500 reserve on the car. I say he's dreaming, and needs to set it at $6500, and the car will go for $7500.
Thanks for the responses so far...anyone else?

At auction I'd say $4500 tops. You have to figure that auctions are for used car dealers to pick up inventory. Most likely a dealer would put a little bit of money into the car and want to make at least $2000 after the sale.
Not trying to be critical of your Dad's car just a realist.

Based on how the auction went (and because he forgot his stupid car title), he didn't place the car in the auction. I'd say less than 10% of cars sold. The highest bidding went to a 93 Polo Green coupe with 70,000 miles, for $11,500. That seemed high, considering a 1969 in excellent condition didn't break $14,000.
He's just going to try to sell it for $8000, I think. Thanks to everyone who helped.

What about the 63 split window that sold for the mid-high $20's? Not original but a very nice driver. Rear fenders cut out slightly, big block hood and, according to the auctioneer, an LT1 engine in it.
Quite a few of the C5s were bid up close to $30K but people aren't going to let their 03/04 C5 sell for that.
I'd say close to 25% - 30% of the cars sold. C4s weren't doing that well but some people got decent deals on the ones that did sell.
The first auctioneer sucked. The last guy was trying to strong arm the sellers into dropping / lowering their reserve. He sold at least 3 that way after the car left the auction block.

Saw your car, by the way. Very nice. Love the color.
Yeah, the last auctioneer did strongarm a few people.
How about 'ol Bob McD not really bidding on anything? Pretty funny...

My brother went with me we watched the entire auction since he's in the market for a C4. Sorry your Dad's has the mileage it does because 92 up is what he's looking for.
Bob's bidding in the past is most likely why so few cars were selling.
Right or wrong at most auctions like this one people are looking for a deal. They're not looking to buy a 'one of a kind' or 'mint' car at a premium price and Bob bidding would drive the prices up.
