Is it crazy to consider selling my ZR1 to buy one in a color I much prefer but with nearly triple the miles?
Most of the time I think I'm nuts for consdering it, but I still can't get it out of my head.
Owning both is out of the question.
Pros of mine now:
- I've put a fair amount of dough into it and now nearly everything is working. This money would not be recovered in a resale as it didn't go to improvements but rather to maintenance and old age items
- Things that don't work right are minor (radio)
- I know the car inside and out
- Fairly low miles (31k)
Cons of mine now:
- I'm not a big fan of red. I like it okay, but I'd much rather have another color
Pros of the one I'm thinking about:
- Still a ZR1
- A color that is very high on my list
- Could be bought for more than I could likely sell mine for
Cons:
- Nearly 3x the mileage of mine
- I'm back to square one on spending bucks
Change the color of your current Z. If it's done right, it won't hurt the value. I've seen lots of midyears with a color change from original and the ones done right are still worth alot $$.
Define a good amount of $ that has been put into it.
Repaints are not cheap and would probably run you $4,000.
If you did change the color it would cost big bucks to not be able to tell it was non-original.Repainting is one thing on a car - changing the color is another animal.
I would list your car for sale and with those type of miles and the maintenance you put into it, you should do just fine in resale. Then I would buy the car you want.
I know what you mean about the color though, I have a white 93 that I have as a daily driver, white just does nothing for me but others seem to like it. It's all personal preferance.

In the neighborhood of $3500 or so.

I was thinking it would be more in the $7,00 - $8,000 range. The guy I would want to do it is excellent but not cheap. I mentioned to him once my thoughts on repainting and he said don't do it. He said sell it and find the color I want. The color I really want isn't a stock ZR1 color - silver. I'm sure the guy would be happy to take my money if I insisted.
Sell it and buy a C6 with the color of your choosing.. Or maybe a end of the year '04 Z06. Think of all the cheap go fast parts you'll have access to... oh.. and a warranty, better stock performance (I know, here we go again), and that awesome new car smell. I am indeed the smartest man in the world next to "90 Corvette ZR-1" or whatever his name is...

I must be nuts too, because I agree with your thinking. What new color are you considering?
My price was if you "know someone" or have a friend.
Typically just a repaint same color is $4,000.00
Yes, it would probably be in the ballpark you mentioned if you are just going in off the street and don't have someone to help you out.
I'd drive it another year or so - that way you can enjoy the $$ you put into it and hopefully it should be a "free" year since you already put alot of $ into it.
When you paint it a different color, you limit the number of buyers, I would sell it outright.

You have one shot at life so live it like you want
Frank ypu know better than that, we dont only live once, we are reborn to live eternaly with God IF we are born again or to burn in eternal torment in hell. So, we cannot live how we want to but we have to live how Jesus tells us to.

I love my ZR-1, but I like loving it free of religious statements.
I totally agree w/ zr11990broken. You cannot serve two masters. Right, enjoy life and its offerings if you can; however, how you live on earth WILL determine where you'll spend eternity. You cannot separate nor "compartmentalize" spiritual and carnal life.
That being said, I liked my ZR-1's but I LOVE the LORD JESUS and will always serve him first. I am not ashamed of the Gospel of JESUS!
Scoob,
Sorry about the "hijack". BTW I might be in a minority here, but red is my favorite color. My first ZR-1 was red/red combo. I really miss that car. Your 90 is sweet and looks well taken care of. Keep us posted if you decide to sell it.
I had the same problem in the past I had a car that I loved but did not like the color. Let me tell you it only gets worse. After a while i really started to hate it. If you sell your car and buy another one (like for like ) it should not cost you too much. I am sure it wil be less then trying to repaint your car to a different color. I tend to see alot of ZR1's for cheap nowadays. Just take your time maybe you can even trade someone. Just post it first and test the waters (it free)
I have often had the same thoughts
I have a black car and the means, and ability to paint it myself ..but it is an extreme amount of labor to do it right
Yellow is my favorite and we all know there ain't many out there
But if it did change the color it is no longer stock, and you have eliminated a portion of an already small buyers market
Not that I'm keeping the car for someone elses pleasure but someday I may want to sell ....so I think I will just leave it Black....
Good luck in your final decision

If it were me, I would go ahead and put it up for sale, and in the mean time look for one with lower mileage in the color I wanted. Like was said earlier, you only live once, you should do what make you happy. You never know when your number is up.
My Dad always wanted a '57 T-bird. He retired, and had plenty of money to go buy one, he keep putting off, and the grim reaper caught up with him.
