Default Belt!

Well, the new waterpump is on... and I have spent the last hour trying to get the G.D belt back on...

I tryed slipping the belt behind the waterpump pulley, but I am not able to get it back on the pulley.. not even close!

I was hoping to get her back togther, but this belt just seems to small!!

Is there some sort of trick I am missing?

The only trick I know of is you need 2 people to do it. One to hold the idler pully and the other to slip the belt over the back side of the pully. I did it a couple of weeks ago with the help of my nephew.

You really need to push the idler puller as far as over as you can and then some to get the new belt on.

I know one of the two belts availible is alittle larger then the other and easier to get on .....I also used alittle dawn dishwashing soap to slip mine on ...

Well I worked on it for another 25 mins and could not get the original GM belt back on.. (it was on there last week!! )

So I ran down to AutoZone and bought a gatorback belt, the belts looked to be the same length when I compared them, but when I went to install the gator back it was slightly larger so I was able to slip it on from behind the waterpump...

This was the toughest part of the waterpump job (getting the belt back on!!)

-Bill

P.s. the gator back belt at AutoZone was $17.99 I thought that was a good price, I have seen them as high as $40 in the past..

Congrads...I put the belt back on as I put the water pump pulley on while my wife held the idler back...

Amazing how hard it is. A year ago my cousin and I changed mine as preventive medicine.

About two hours later we were cussin and bleeding all over everything while our wives were sitting in the patio laughing at us.

We finally got it done...

A week later I found the old belt with a note on it. My cousin had put it back in the tool closet.

The note said, "Corvette LT5 belt, to be changed again in 3 years... BY ANYONE BESIDES ART AND JIM!"

Regards,

Bill, I should have said something to you yesterday when you told me you were doing the water pump. I swapped mine for a gatorback and it went smooth as silk. Sorry about that.

Oh yeah. Been there done that. I heard the Gatorback belt was easier. Next time I will get THAT belt. I did it myself and fought it for awhile. Then said heck with it and got the belt halfway on the powersteering pulley then cranked the motor and it went on the rest of the way. Not ideal, but it worked.
