Default Allen kit for top end

Does anybody have the specifics on the torx bolts for the LT5 plenum and cam covers ? Will be looking in the GM shop manual today.

Are the lenth of the bolts an industry standard lenth ?
Or do I need to order them from a specific source?
We are looking for stainless allen style head bolt with the proper size shoulder / built in washer.

Ken,

That White Racing Products stainless bolt kit looks pretty nice. Are the White bolts Allen heads or Torx heads? Anyway, thanks for posting that link.

Has anyone just changed out their factory bolts with this kit? Can this changeover be done on the cam covers by following the torque sequence on the cam bolts without doing any other engine work and without resealing the cam covers? I would like to upgrade the bolts, but I don't want to start any leaks on my motor.

Maybe I should just get a set just in case... That way, my motor will never have to come apart.

Steve

They are Allen bolts. I hatethe Torx bolts, it doesn't matter how careful you are, you will strip one of them.

I'm sure it's possible. You just have to do one bolt at a time. But if it was my car, I'd strip the top end stuff on and either powder coat it or paint it to get it looking fresh again, then reseal.

Hi,

This link also shows a motor with stainless steel bolts. I am not sure if they are the same ones from White Racing, but they sure look sharp.

Thanks,

DDSLT5,

Did you have any serious issues with in-car bolt access or (argghh!) stripping the Torx fasteners, as Jeffvette warned about above? Did you follow the factory manual torque sequences in loosening and tightening the bolts or did you just remove and replace/retorque one bolt at a time? I definitely don't want to cause some sort of leak due to improper technique.

My plenum and cam covers are already polished, so they aren't coming off for any bolt freshening... As Mark Haibeck says on his site, this evolution is very labor intensive.

From the ZR1Specialist web site, it looks like the Mark Haibeck kit is $45 cheaper than the White Racing kit. Do the two kits contain the same number and grade of stainless components? The difference in cost would just about cover the expense of the Sam Adams required to perform the job.

Wow, thanks for the fast responses and pix on this! We should all probably be driving our cars more.

OK, since it was me who informed everyone before, I will inform folks again. You can get all the bolts from Metric and Multistandard http://www.metricmmc.com . You can get the torx heads if you like but I like the hex head bolts. And no, I'm too dang lazy to look up the bolt sizes right now. You can also find those little bitty bolts on the throttle body at any ACE hardware as well as getting SS nuts for the throttle cable cover there also. There is only one screw you can't find however, the sheetmetal screw on the front of the throttle cable cover or the screws on the throttle cable clips.

BTW, if you are replacing the bolts on the cam covers you had best replace the dowty washers also.
