I had to go over to the east coast of FL today for a warranty reapir job. The boss couldn't make it so I got to take my car. :steering: :auto:
So anyway I decided to take it easy to see if I could better the MPG I got on my trip to TN 2 weeks ago (27.6MPG). I couldn't believe my eyes at ~130 miles into the trip:
My 12 year old, 108k mile, overweight pig  of a ZR1 was averaging 30 MPG!! Averaging not instant. Instant readings were 35 MPG. Now this is after adding headers, exhaust, and P&P on the P&IHs. Is it possible that these mods have actually helped the car get better gas mileage? The first trip I took in the car was up to SGC in Nov. The car averaged 25.5 MPG on that trip. Then the 27.6 MPG to TN. And now 30 MPG.
Of course with "spirited" driving the averages are way down from that. But imagine a car with ~ 450hp a top speed over 180mph getting 30 MPG on the highway. Sounds crazy.
My car doesn't like running at 1500 rpm. Too far down the power curve, and the exhaust is too quiet! I think I average in the 14 - 16 range. That's a stock motor with a 4.10 rear, and I like being at 2500 or more. I don't cruise in 6th unless I am going around 70.
Last February I got 23.2 mpg while driving from California to Pennsylvania in a stock ZR-1 ( # 334 ) ... The milage was no where close to yours... however... I never spared the horses at any opportunity along the way... :D
When catching a good tailwind in AZ and New Mexico while cruising about 85 to 90 mph the instant mpg was indicating 29 to 33 mpg...
On the way back with 4.10 gears and a lot of headwinds I only averaged about 21 mpg...
I think the headers and other mods make a significant difference in the mpg...
I read somewhere in a Corvette mag that a gas milage competition revealed a 36 + mpg average out of a LT-1 6 speed C-4... That is a little better than my 35th Anniversary with would do at 45 mph with the 2.59 rear gear and 700 R4 at 1100 rpm...
If a guy was interested in tuning a ZR-1 for good mpg he could probably get 35 mpg at slower speeds... but what fun would that be?
Ted
On my last trip to BG (CI-IV) I averaged 27.6 MPG as I was pulling off of the exit! Right behind me was 96LT4 in his GS averaging just a shade over 25. That was after a romp up to 100 from second through third gear WOT :D
For a 12 year old "pig" ( :nono: ), these cars will RUN! :auto: :smash: :smash:
Re: The car just keeps on suprising me (ShawnZR-1)
 I don't even look at my mileage, I am afraid to see something like 10 MPG. On the Rare occasion that I am driving her, I like to get on it from time to time to blow her out and exercise the secondaries.
Same place I went. I wonder if that exhaust is really worth another 10. I'd be surprised. Maybe it is that and a couple other small things adding up. Good comparison info, thanks!
Maybe next time, I'll try it with the power key on. :jester

Re: The car just keeps on suprising me (Chris@VetteFinders)
From every post I have read on here the B&B is the choice for the most powerfull exhaust. I do have a flipped airbox. But sitting still on the dyno pretty much renders that useless. And a DRM chip, which may be hurting me more than helping me.
How many pulls did you do?
Maybe it's the miles. It just keeps getting stronger the more of them I put on the car.
