Just completed installing a set of Brian Asplaugh's headers on my 91 and all I can say is WOW!!! The car sounds awesome running through the Flowmaster system. His headers are as he said "as close to a bolt on system as you can get." A couple of issues came up I thought I would pass along. First since the stock manifolds were missing four bolts, I just replaced them all with a set of metric hex heads, that way I avoided the spacers and got a much cleaner look. Second all I had to do with the dipstick tube is move it one bolt over. Third the 02 sensor leads on the stock sensors would work, but would be in a bad situation for heat degradation. The solution was to just suit up with a set of Bosch sensors with extended leads, that let me route the leads in basically the stock location. I was told that the 02 sensors have stainless steel leads and that splicing in copper wire would not give you the proper resistance. Don't know for sure, but why take chances. The s-pipe on the right side aligned up perfectly, but I did have to neck it down from 3" to 2.5" since thats the system I have. I did not install any cats as we have no smog police in Wyoming. The quality and workmanship of the headers is outstanding and I would not hesitate to recommend them to anybody looking to install a set of headers. Brian promptly answered all my emails when I had any questions, and there were a few. Now I don't care if the Bose goes to hell, I'd rather listen to the car. Later 84 CF 91 ZR-1 #2039
Congrats on the headers.Does the ZR1 backfire now? Don't you just
love the sound of the motor even more now?
Backfire, the first time I shifted from 1st to 2nd at 7,000 rpm I almost crapped my pants. I will get it on the dyno next week and check the A/F ratio. I understand that if it's running a little rich this can cause the backfire. Once I know the A/F ratio I will have Marc H. burn a chip for it. Sound, the sound is awesome running with the top off it's like surround sound, with the top on it's mostly behind you, but still loud when you stand on it. It's hard to believe it's that loud running through mufflers and a resonator. Will most likely scrap the resonator for an x-pipe later. You can sure tell that it's definately not a pushrod motor now. The car also runs about 10 degrees cooler for some reason. Later 84 CF 91 ZR-1
I've had Brian's headers on for about a year. Best mod you can do.
Yeah they are a must if you plan on doing more mods down the line i.e. top end porting, stroker kit, etc. Funny how it starts out with the basic trinkets catback exhaust, chip, open air box etc. then before you know it your looking at top end porting, stroker kits, etc. I guess to much hp is never enough. Thats what happens when you read to many posts on this forum, you figure if others can do it, why not me? I never have been a purist that likes to leave things alone, mod it and run it till the wheels fall off, thats my theory. Later 84 CF 91 ZR1

I noticed the same thing when I first put headers on my stock '90 ZR-1 some years ago. I didn't expect the car to run cooler, but sure was happy about it.
David:I too order some Alspaugh Header ,just one question did you get one or 2 small pipes with it , since I had mine ship tp Swain tech for Thermal barrier coating and only came with one tube about 8'long 3''dia neck down to 2.3/4 and no tube for the flange side. I am sure it must be a oversight if not why send one without the other.

I just ordered a set of Brian's Headers a week ago. Now I just have to wait the 3-4 week lead time and then I can get those babies coated and installed.
I also have the flowmaster cat back and I just can't wait to hear the LT-5 rumble in the near future.
Tell me about the bolts you used, please? Where can I get some for my headers? Any place that sells fasteners?
And I will be doing the same trick as you with the Oxygen sensors. And the dipstick sounds like good advice. That was the one part I am worried about.
Thanks,
Ed
