I want to drop an LT5 engine into a 1989 convertible…more to the story…

Many offered advice when I posted earlier asking for help with this project. Now I just wanted to let all know that I made a big step forward. With Christmas, work, being under the weather, and taking the family on vacation---

I bought a 1989 Corvette ragtop.

Has all the heavy-duty optional parts. Somehow has FX3 shocks on it. 1 of 4? But FX3 is not listed on the glove box. Has a 6-speed. Is a Vehicle Lead Unit (RPO ACM) What ever that is? Has LTPWS. Carfax (Thanks Preacher David) first listed the car in 1990 with 7,000 miles on it. So I am not sure what I bought but it had good karma.

Now I need to let the wife cool off and the bank account build back up.

When I get back home in like March (hopefully) I have all the pictures of when I tore out my 89 dash board. removing the entire dash isnt that hard I did it in a afternoon and I even drove the car to work like that for one day hehehe

Truthfully I belive it would be easier to remove all the wiring in your car and rewire it from a doner ZR-1 along with the dash and interior componets, Im not to sure how much wire splicing you will have to do other wise to keep the 89 dash in, im sure most of the controls will not be too hard, I belive the problems will be with the digital dash, I do remeber seeing one prototype dash that had the higher RPM limits that will be something hard to come by!!
I believe you can do anything you want to do to it.

But are you planing on keeping the original dash??

Phrogs: First do take care over there.

I DO have one of the few 8000-rpm flat dashes to put in the car. And the engine IS a pre-production LT5 engine. In fact you also looked at the same engine a year ago up in Canada. Will I ended up getting it and had it dragged down to SoCal. I since traced the engine to a crushed ’89 narrow body convertible.

Should be fun but need to wait till I can make my way through my Honey-Do list.

1969 - A work in progress. Recently started for the first time in years.
1979 - Blown head gasket, just parked. (Kathy wants it sold, $6000.)
1989 - Building a 1989 LT5 powered vert. Have the car, an engine, wheels and dash, need the wide body, computer, and $$$.
1999 - Used to get to work to make money for the other three.
So when ya getting the 59?

Well sounds like you have just about everything you need...except the wifing harness shouldnt be to much trouble!!

Id like to see pics of what you have if you dont mind and yes I remeber that motor very late prototype only a few minor differences than production and minus the cam cover emblem!

things arent that bad over here is just that I hate the waiting to see if something is going to happen!!
id like to get it over with if were going to do something!!

later

Is this the engine I sold you?? If so, please email me with everything you have found out. I am quite interested in the details.

Thanks :D

Ps: I have a complete 90ZR1 dash and wiring for sale if you need it. :auto:

Guys, Been working the last few days.

This is a summery of was built on the production line.

Built in model year 1988
24 1989 ZR1 prototypes

Built in model year 1989

5 1989 ZR1 pilots w/ LT5 engines but w/o ZR1 body work
17 1989 ZR1 pilots w/ LT5 engines and ZR1 body work
15 1989 ZR1 prototypes w/ active suspensions
45 1989 ZR1 engineering units
5 1990 ZR1 prototypes w/ LT5 engines but w/o ZR1 body work
7 1990 ZR1 prototypes w/ LT5 engines and ZR1 body work

Totals then prior to 1990 regular production

5 1989 narrow bodies
101 1989 full blown ZR1’s

Of the five narrow body cars, four were coupes and the fifth was a convertible. The VIN sequence on the engine (for my project and the engine you sold me Kris) came out of the one narrow body convertible.

So that is what I am going to do. Put it back in a convertible.

Mike and Kris, I just spent my money on the car so can’t buy any more parts till later in the year. Johnny, I will keep my eyes open for you.

George

I could use a -->fuel pump assembly unit<-- for my 1988 prototype built in June of 1987 on the 1988 assembly line. Mine was a rusted mess.

Tyler.

PS They were 24 1988 MY ZR1 prototypes built on the 1987 production line.
